Product Info

Brass bells on a braided cord

Material

Arm's length — hangs 56 cm

Size

Overview

A door is the quietest thing in a house. Someone comes in, someone goes out, and the first you know of it is a voice from the next room.

Peal answers. The heavy bell at the bottom swings first and tugs the cord above it, so both tiers sound a fraction apart — two seconds of bright brass, then quiet again.

Care

A dry cloth when the bells dust up. The brass is unlacquered, so it darkens slowly to old-penny brown — leave it there, or buff the cups to keep it bright.

Materials

Brass bells and cast lotus canopies on a braided cord, with amber-glass and wood beads and a pierced brass medallion at the top.

  • 7 brass bells — two tiers of three, plus one larger below
  • 56 cm drop · 95 g · 5.5 cm medallion
  • Cord loops over any nail or hook

No wind required

Made for the inside of a door

Hook it on the inner edge and the door does the work — no wind, no wiring, no battery. It clears a handle and still hangs free, and an adhesive hook holds it.

The sound

Two tiers, so it rolls

The upper canopy sounds a beat before the lower one, six small bells overlap into a shimmer, and the weighted bell drops the last low note in as it settles. Two seconds, then quiet.

Where to hang it

Or a window, or a porch

On a shutter latch or a window handle a draught finds it a few times an hour. Under a porch roof or on a covered balcony it works outside too. The pierced medallion catches the light while it waits.

Now I know when the kids are home

Hung it on the inside of the front door and I hear it from the kitchen over the extractor fan. It sits at just the right level — it cuts through, a little run of bells, and then it stops. Took a minute with a cup hook. The bottom bell is the one doing the work; it swings and everything above it follows.

Delicate, and that's exactly right

It's a narrow thing — about the length of my forearm and a half — and lighter than you'd guess from photos. That turns out to be the point: on a closing door it swings and chimes rather than knocking. The brass has a dull warmth to it rather than a shiny gold look, which suits our hallway.

On the shutter latch in the study

Mine lives on a shutter latch rather than a door, and the afternoon draught sets it off a few times an hour. It is long enough to hang properly clear of the sill, and the pierced medallion at the top catches the light between rings. A lovely thing to work next to.

Frequently asked questions

Where is it meant to hang?
Anywhere that moves. The inner edge of a door is what it was built for. After that: a shutter latch, a window catch, a cupboard door, or a hook where a draught reaches it.
How loud is it?
Domestic. A short bright run of bells, then silence after two or three seconds — about the level of a shop door in a quiet street.
Can it hang outside?
Yes, somewhere with a roof over it — a porch, a covered balcony, a shed door, a garden room. Brass weathers happily and only deepens in tone; the braided cord and wood beads last longest out of standing rain, so pick a sheltered spot and it will keep going for years.
How does it hang?
The cord finishes in a loop, so it drops over a nail, a cup hook, or the hook already on your door. At 95 g an adhesive hook holds it, so nothing needs drilling.
How does the brass age?
Indoors it darkens slowly to a warm old-penny brown and settles there. There is no lacquer on it, so a buff across the bell cups keeps it bright if you prefer it pale.
