Adjustable Pillow Guide: How Adjustable Loft Works and How to Tune It

Calm Eden Sleep Journal · Updated 28 September 2026

Short answer

An adjustable pillow has a zip and loose fill, usually shredded memory foam, so you set the height yourself instead of guessing from a label. Remove a handful at a time, sleep on it, and repeat; most people settle within a few nights. It suits combination sleepers and anyone between two standard lofts. Keep the removed fill in a bag for later.

The right pillow height depends on your shoulders, your mattress and the position you sleep in, and none of those is printed on a pillow label. An adjustable pillow sidesteps the guesswork: open the zip, take fill out or put it back, and sleep on the result. This guide explains what "adjustable" actually means, how to tune one without wasting nights, who gets the most from it, and how the adjustable pillows we stock compare with a fixed two-height contour.

What "adjustable" means on a pillow

Almost every adjustable pillow works the same way: an outer cover with a zip, an inner liner, and loose fill you can remove. The differences are in the fill.

  • Shredded memory foam. Small pieces of foam that mould to the head and stay put. The most common fill; feels supportive and slightly springy rather than plush.
  • Shredded foam blended with fiber. Softer and lighter, fluffs up more, settles more.
  • Removable layers or inserts. Some pillows use flat foam layers you take out instead of loose fill. Fewer settings, but no loose pieces to manage.
  • Loose natural fills such as buckwheat hulls. Adjustable in the same way, but heavier and with a firmer, grainier feel.

Whatever the fill, the number to look for on a listing is the height range. A pillow that adjusts from about 2 in to 6 in covers stomach, back and side sleeping; a narrower range may not.

Who gets the most from one

  1. Combination sleepers. If you fall asleep on your back and wake on your side, you can set a middle height that works in both positions instead of choosing one. Our guide for back and side sleepers covers the trade-offs.
  2. Anyone between standard lofts. Fixed pillows come in a few heights; your shoulder gap does not.
  3. Couples on one mattress. The mattress firmness was chosen for two people; the pillow height can still be chosen for one.
  4. People who have bought the wrong height before. An adjustable pillow is a cheaper way to find your number than buying three fixed pillows.

It is a less obvious choice if you want a defined neck roll (see cervical pillows for side sleepers), or if you dislike a pillow that needs the occasional fluff.

How to tune an adjustable pillow in three nights

  1. Night one: as shipped. Sleep on it full. In the morning, notice whether your head felt pushed up (too high) or your neck felt unsupported (too low). Most pillows ship on the high side.
  2. Night two: one handful out. Remove roughly a handful of fill, zip it up, shake the pillow so the fill spreads evenly, and sleep on it. Put the removed fill in a zip bag; you will want it if you change mattress or position.
  3. Night three: fine-tune. Repeat in smaller steps. Side sleepers usually stop after one or two handfuls; back sleepers after a few; stomach sleepers keep going until the pillow is nearly flat.
Check level, not feel. Have someone photograph you lying in your usual position. On your side, nose, chin and breastbone should line up; on your back, your face should point at the ceiling, not tilt down toward your chest. Adjust to the picture, then let comfort settle in over a week. The pillow-height quiz gives you a starting range before you begin.

Adjustable fill vs a fixed two-height contour

Adjustable fill Fixed two-height contour
How you change height Add or remove fill (many settings) Flip to the other edge (two settings)
Neck support shape Conforms; no fixed roll Defined neck edge and head cradle
Best when You are unsure of your loft or switch positions You like a shaped cradle and know roughly which height you need
Maintenance Occasional fluff; fill can clump None beyond the cover
Washing Cover only (check label); keep fill dry Cover only; foam core spot-clean
Arm room for side sleepers Depends on how much fill you leave Some designs have a hollow face or armrest area

Neither is better in the abstract. If you have tried a contour and found the shape prescriptive, adjustable fill is the natural next step. If you have tried a soft pillow and wished it held a shape, a contour is. Contour vs regular pillow goes deeper on the fixed shapes.

Caring for shredded fill

  • Fluff weekly. Shake and knead the pillow to break up clumps and spread the fill.
  • Keep the fill dry. Foam pieces take a long time to dry and can degrade if soaked. Wash the cover according to its label and air the fill in shade.
  • Air out new foam. A new-foam smell is common for the first day or two; leave the pillow unzipped in a ventilated room.
  • Store the spare fill. Label the bag with the pillow name so you can add it back later.

Choosing between Tune and Flex. Both are adjustable shredded-foam pillows from Calm Eden at similar prices. Tune publishes its adjustable range and standard size on the listing; Flex adds a King size for wider beds. If you sleep on a king mattress or want a wider pillow to roll on, Flex is the one to look at; otherwise the published 2–6 in range makes Tune the easier one to tune by the method above.

If you would rather flip than refill: Amity is the fixed-shape option. At the time of writing (28 Sep 2026) one pillow is $69.90 with a $10 store credit, two are $125.82 with a silk pillowcase included, and buy three, get one free is $209.70. See the bundles page for current offers. Every pillow comes with a 30-day risk-free trial, opened or used; see the refund policy.

Before you buy

Look for a published height range that covers your position, a zip you can open easily, and a cover with a clear care label. Decide whether you want adjustable fill or a fixed contour by asking one question: do you know your height yet? If not, adjustable fill is the way to find out. Browse all pillows for the rest of the range.

Frequently asked questions

Are adjustable pillows worth it?

They are worth it if you do not know your ideal height, if you change position during the night, or if you have bought fixed-height pillows that turned out too high or too low. They are less useful if you already sleep well on a pillow you like, or if you want a firm, defined neck contour.

What is the best adjustable pillow for neck pain?

No pillow treats neck pain, and we do not make that claim. What an adjustable pillow can do is let you set a height at which your head rests level on your own mattress, which many people find more comfortable. If pain is persistent, or comes with numbness or tingling, see a clinician rather than changing pillows.

How much fill should I remove?

Start with the pillow as shipped, then remove roughly a handful at a time. Sleep on each setting for a night before removing more. Side sleepers usually keep most of the fill; back sleepers remove some; stomach sleepers remove most of it.

Do adjustable pillows go flat?

Shredded foam can settle and clump, which lowers the height. A quick fluff and redistribution restores it; if it stays lower after that, add back some of the fill you set aside.

Can you wash an adjustable pillow?

Usually only the cover. Shredded foam should be kept dry and aired rather than soaked. Follow the care label on the specific pillow, and empty the fill into a bag before washing the cover if the label allows machine washing.

Is an adjustable pillow good for side sleepers?

Yes, provided you leave enough fill in to fill the gap between your neck and shoulder. Side sleepers usually need the higher end of the adjustable range. Our side-sleeper height guide explains how to measure the gap.
