Silk, weighted and contoured sleep masks laid out on linen bedding

Weighted vs Silk vs Contoured Sleep Masks: How to Choose One

Calm Eden Sleep Journal · Updated September 2026

Short answer

Choose by what bothers you: a contoured or 3D mask blocks light without touching your eyelids (good for lash extensions and makeup); a silk mask is the lightest and gentlest on skin; a weighted mask adds gentle pressure many people find calming. Side sleepers should pick a slim, low-profile mask with a flat strap.

Even small amounts of light — a streetlamp through the curtains, a standby LED, early summer sunrise — can make it harder to stay asleep. A sleep mask solves that for a few dollars and works anywhere: at home, on planes, in hotel rooms and for daytime naps. Small studies, including in hospital patients, have linked eye masks with better sleep in noisy, bright environments. The main decision is which style you'll actually keep wearing.

Sleep mask types compared

Type How it feels Best for Watch for
Flat silk or cotton Light, soft, barely there Sensitive skin, travel, first-time users Can let light in at the nose
Contoured / 3D Cups sit around the eyes, no pressure on lids Lash extensions, makeup, REM eye movement, total blackout Bulkier for side sleepers
Weighted Gentle, even pressure over the eyes and temples People who find pressure calming; back sleepers Heavier; can feel warm; check the fit if you sleep on your side
Memory foam Molds to the face and seals out light Blocking light around the nose bridge Less breathable

Which mask for your sleep position?

  • Back sleepers can wear any style; weighted masks sit most comfortably on the back.
  • Side sleepers should look for a thin, flexible mask with a flat, adjustable strap — hard buckles and thick padding press into the pillow.
  • Stomach sleepers usually prefer a very thin silk or cotton mask.

Materials

Silk (especially mulberry silk) is smooth and lightweight and causes little friction on skin and lashes. Cotton is breathable and easy to wash. Polyester satin is smooth and affordable. Memory foam and 3D molded masks trade some breathability for a better seal and no pressure on the eyes. For weighted masks, check what the weight is made of (glass beads are common) and whether the cover is removable.

Getting a light-tight fit

  1. Adjust the strap so the mask is snug but doesn't press — too tight causes pressure on the eyes and headaches.
  2. Check the nose bridge: most light leaks come from there. Contoured and memory-foam masks seal it best.
  3. Position the strap above the ears (or just over them) so it doesn't slip when you turn.
  4. If a weighted mask feels heavy, try it for part of the night first.
Pair it with sound. Light and noise usually come together — traffic, a partner's phone, hotel corridors. Earplugs or a white noise machine complete the setup. See our earplugs guide.

Washing and care

  • Silk: hand-wash cool with a gentle detergent and air-dry flat.
  • Cotton and polyester: usually machine-washable in a laundry bag.
  • Weighted and memory foam: wash the removable cover; spot-clean the insert.
  • Wash your mask every week or two — it sits against skin, oils and eye makeup every night.

Frequently asked questions

Is it good to sleep with a sleep mask every night?

For most people, yes — a clean, comfortable mask that isn't too tight is a simple way to block light. If you notice eye irritation or pressure headaches, loosen the strap, switch to a contoured style, or stop using it.

Are weighted sleep masks better?

Not better, just different. Many people find the gentle pressure relaxing; others prefer a lighter mask. Weighted masks usually suit back sleepers best.

Which sleep mask is best for side sleepers?

A thin, flexible mask with a flat adjustable strap and no hard buckles. Bulky 3D and weighted masks can press into the pillow.

Can I wear a sleep mask with eyelash extensions?

Choose a contoured or 3D mask with cups that sit away from the lashes so there's no friction or pressure on them.

How do I wash a silk sleep mask?

Hand-wash in cool water with a gentle detergent, rinse, and let it air-dry flat away from direct heat.
