Travertine Wall Clock: 6 Things to Know About the Alabaster

A travertine wall clock is a clock with a stone-look face that works as wall decor as well as a timepiece. The Alabaster layers a raised moon disc over a travertine-look slab, runs on a sweep movement and comes in three sizes.

Most wall clocks are one flat disc. This one is built as overlapping stone shapes, so the face has depth. Check the size against your wall, how the movement sounds and how it hangs before you choose.

TLDR: The Alabaster looks like stone and weighs like wood: a travertine-effect finish on wood board with a raised moon disc, a sweep quartz movement and a single keyhole on the back. These six points cover the face, size, sound, hanging, material and care.

1 The face is built in layers, not printed flat

The larger shape is finished in pale travertine with slim matte brown numerals set out at the edge. A matte off-white moon disc sits raised over its right-hand side, and a smaller, darker stone shape overlaps the bottom corner. Because the disc stands off the face, the dial catches light and reads with depth.

2 Pick the size from the wall, not the clock

There are three sizes, measured across the widest point: 12 in (29.7 cm), 14 in (34.7 cm) and 16 in (39.5 cm). Above a sideboard or a console the 12 in is enough. On a bare wall with nothing else on it, the 16 in holds the space. The 14 in is the middle choice if you are unsure. Leave room around doors, shelves and artwork.

3 The second hand glides instead of stepping

Behind the face is a continuous-sweep quartz movement. The second hand moves round smoothly rather than jumping once a second, so there is no stepping tick, which is why this kind of movement is chosen for bedrooms and studies. The hands are matte black against the pale face.

4 It hangs from a single screw or hook

One keyhole slot on the back drops over a single screw head or an ordinary picture hook. There is no bracket and no template. The clock is about 3 cm deep and weighs about 0.64 kg. It takes one AA battery, which is not included, so have one ready before you hang it.

5 It is a travertine finish, not solid stone

The face and the overlapping stone shape are laminated wood board with a stone-effect finish: pale travertine on the face, a darker sand tone on the smaller shape. That is what keeps the clock at about 0.64 kg instead of the several kilos real stone would weigh at this size. If you want solid stone on the wall, this is not that.

6 Dust it dry and keep water away

Dust the clock with a dry soft cloth, or a clean dry brush to get in around the numerals. For a mark, use a barely damp cloth and dry it straight away. The board core does not like standing moisture, so never soak it and never use spray cleaner or anything abrasive. Take the clock off the wall to change the battery.

FAQ

Is the Alabaster wall clock made of real travertine?

No. The travertine look is a stone-effect finish on laminated wood board, which keeps the clock at about 0.64 kg. The raised moon disc is matte off-white.

Does the Alabaster clock tick?

It uses a continuous-sweep quartz movement, so the second hand glides round instead of stepping once a second. There is no stepping tick.

Which size should I choose?

Measure the clear wall space. The 12 in (29.7 cm) suits the space above a sideboard or console, the 16 in (39.5 cm) holds a bare wall, and the 14 in (34.7 cm) sits between them.

How does it hang, and does it need a battery?

One keyhole slot on the back drops over a single screw or picture hook. It takes one AA battery, which is not included.

How do I clean it?

Dust it with a dry soft cloth. For a mark, use a barely damp cloth and dry it straight away; do not soak it or use spray cleaner.
