Solid cast brass, unlacquered

Overview

Almost everything small enough to leave on a windowsill is soft — a shell, a pebble, a seed head. Pick this one up and it is metal, and colder than the room.

Solid cast brass, 4.4 cm long, standing on its own six legs.

Care

A dry cloth is all it needs. Unlacquered, so it darkens where your fingers rest — or a little brass polish brings the shine back.

Materials

Solid cast brass, left unlacquered, with the detail cast in rather than applied — four blade-shaped wings with branching veins, a domed thorax, a banded abdomen, fine antennae and six thin jointed legs.

  • Finish: Antiqued — recesses darkened to green-bronze, high points rubbed to honey brass
  • Underside: Raw cast metal between the legs
  • Size: 4.4 cm longest, 3 cm across, ~12 g

Catches the light

A windowsill-sized object

The depth of a sill, the lip of a shelf, a corner of a desk. Wings lifted and the body clear of the surface, so low sun throws a long bee-shaped shadow behind it.

Pocket-sized

Picks up like a coin

Cold, and denser than it looks — your hand expects resin and gets metal. Everyone who spots it picks it up.

You can trace the wing veins with a fingernail

The casting is lovely — you can actually trace the veins in the wings with a fingernail, and it stands up on its own six legs with the body lifted clear of the shelf. Mine lives on the kitchen windowsill and throws a great shadow around ten in the morning.

The dark green in the recesses makes it

Mine came with a proper green-bronze sitting down in the wing veins and between the abdomen bands, and bright honey brass on all the raised bits, so it reads as something found rather than something bought. Two months on my desk and the spot where I keep picking it up has gone noticeably warmer in colour. No rocking on any of the six legs on an oak desk.

Bought three as small gifts

Slipped one into a card for my mother, one for a friend who keeps bees and one for myself. All three arrived nearly identical, with slight differences in how dark the patina sat, which I think is the point. As a thing to find on a shelf it is excellent.

Frequently asked questions

What size is it?
4.4 cm at its longest and 3 cm across — about the width of two fingertips side by side. One of the photographs shows it held between two fingertips so you can judge the scale.
Is it solid brass or plated?
Cast brass through and through — not plated steel, not resin with a brass coat. You can see it on the underside, which is left as raw cast metal. No lacquer either, so the surface keeps changing with handling.
Does it stand on its own?
Yes. It stands on its own six cast legs with the body lifted a few millimetres clear of the surface — no base, plinth or pin. It sits equally well on a windowsill, a bookshelf, a desk or the edge of a tea tray.
Will the finish change over time?
Yes, and that is intended. The brass is unlacquered, so the bright high points warm and slowly darken where your fingers rest while the green-bronze stays down in the wing veins. Most owners let it happen; brass polish on the raised bands brings the shine back if you would rather keep it bright.
