Overview

Most candles burn a tunnel down the middle, leaving a ring of wasted wax and a flame you must put out before you sleep. Melt™ never lights the wick. A small warm bulb sits inside the opaline glass globe, directly over the candle, and melts the wax from the top down, gently and evenly, with no soot, no smoke and nothing to blow out.

Three warm shades: Ivory gives the quietest glow, Amber has the most colour, and Terracotta is the deepest and nearest to firelight.

Care

Unplug it and let the bulb cool before you touch the globe, which runs warm by design. Dust the glass with a dry microfibre cloth, lift spilled wax out of the well while it is still soft, and keep water and oil off the wooden base.

A lamp that also melts wax

On a nightstand it is a small warm lamp first and a candle warmer second. The opaline globe sends a low amber wash up the wall, enough to read a page and dim enough to leave on as you fall asleep, and there is no flame in the room to remember to put out.

Put a candle in and switch it on

The candle sits in a turned well in the wooden base, centred under the globe, and the lip catches any drips. You need no matches, no lighter and no wick trimming. After eight to ten minutes the scent fills the room.

Glass, chrome and a solid wood base

The glass is hand-blown opaline and not moulded acrylic, the single arm is polished chrome with no visible joint, and the base is solid wood with the grain running through it. Three materials and no plastic on show, which is why it can stay out on a nightstand all year and need not be kept in a cupboard.

My expensive candles finally burn evenly

I had two half-tunnelled jars sitting in a drawer because the wick had drowned and I couldn't get them lit again. Both are usable under this — it melted the whole top flat in about fifteen minutes and now the wax is going down level. Got the Ivory. Bought it because of the cat

We stopped burning candles entirely after she knocked one off the shelf. This solves it — nothing to knock over that is on fire, and the wood base is heavy enough that she can't shift it. It does get properly hot around the top of the globe so I wouldn't put it somewhere a child could reach up to it. Terracotta, which is darker than it looks online and I prefer that.

Scent is softer, not weaker

I'll be honest, the first ten minutes I thought it wasn't working because there's no obvious hit of fragrance the way there is when you light one. Come back in half an hour and the whole room smells of it, and it's the actual scent rather than the smoky version. Amber shade. Cord is a decent length, though it comes out of the side rather than the back so it's slightly visible.

Frequently asked questions

Does the candle still need lighting?
No, the wick stays unlit. A warm bulb inside the glass globe melts the wax from above. Leave the wick alone and simply switch on the lamp.
Which candles fit?
The well takes standard votives and pillars up to about 8 cm tall and 7 cm across, which covers most jar candles and votives. Very tall candles, or very wide ones with several wicks, will not melt evenly under one heat source.
Is the scent as strong as when the candle burns?
Warming builds more slowly than burning, so allow eight to ten minutes. After that the scent holds steady for hours with its true top notes, because nothing is burnt off.
Is it bright enough to use as a lamp?
As a mood lamp, yes: soft enough to read by up close and pleasant to leave on overnight. It will not light a whole room.
What happens when the bulb fails?
It comes fitted with a standard, replaceable warming bulb. Let it cool, lift the globe and fit a bulb of the same wattage; a brighter bulb will scorch the fragrance.
Can I leave it on, and which plug does it have?
Yes. It has no flame, so it can stay on while you read or sleep. It comes with a US two-pin plug and an inline switch. Keep it on a hard surface, clear of curtains, and let it cool before you move it.
