Overview

A candle warmer lamp does one thing a match cannot: it melts the wax from above, with heat and light instead of fire. The wick never lights. Nothing burns, so nothing sooty comes off the top of the jar and settles on the ceiling above it, and the fragrance oils that a flame would destroy on its way out get released intact instead.

That is the part most people are surprised by. A lit candle is quietly combusting a good share of what you paid for - the flame sits far hotter than the wax needs to be, and the top notes go up with it. A halogen bulb held a few centimetres above the surface warms the pool to a fraction of that temperature: hot enough to release the fragrance, cool enough to leave it whole. The throw is softer in the first ten minutes and then it keeps going, long after a burning candle would have flattened out.

The lamp itself is a gooseneck. A weighted 13 cm disc of matte black steel, a telescopic stem rising off the back of it, and a fixed curved arm that carries the shade out over the centre of the base so it hangs directly above the jar. Because the stem telescopes, you set the gap yourself - down close for a tall apothecary jar, up to the full 36 cm for a wide three-wick. The shade is real ribbed pressed glass with a scalloped rim, not acrylic, and the flutes break the light into fine vertical lines instead of one flat wash.

On the lead there is a rotary controller doing three jobs: an on/off, a dimmer with four levels, and a 24-hour cycle timer set at 2, 4, 8 or 10 hours. Dimmed right down it reads as a bedside lamp that happens to smell like something; at full it takes fifteen to twenty minutes to open a melt pool. It runs from a standard socket with the halogen bulb already fitted.

Care

Let it cool before you move it. The shade sits directly over the heat and the glass holds warmth for several minutes after the bulb goes off, so give it ten before you handle the top. Wipe the glass with a dry microfibre cloth - if wax ever spits onto it, warm the shade briefly and lift the wax away with a paper towel rather than scraping it cold. Keep water off the disc base and the inline controller, and wipe the steel dry rather than using any glass cleaner on it. Do not leave it running unattended overnight, and do not sit a candle wider than the base plate on it: the edges will not melt and the jar will not sit flat.

Heat instead of a flame

A halogen bulb sits directly above the wax and melts the pool from the surface down, so the wick never lights and no soot ever comes off the jarThe stem telescopes and the arm holds its position, so you set the gap between shade and wax once — close for a tall apothecary jar, open for a wide three-wickAn inline rotary controller dims the bulb through four levels and holds a 24-hour cycle timer at 2, 4, 8 or 10 hours, so it repeats the next evening without being reset

The scent survives the melt

A flame burns off a good share of what you paid for. Warming the pool from above releases the same fragrance without combusting it, so the throw starts softer and keeps going long after a lit candle would have gone flat - and the jar lasts a great deal longer.

Adjusting the telescopic stem of the Taper™ Candle Warmer Lamp on a bedside table

Set the height once

The stem telescopes and the arm holds its position, so you close the gap for a tall jar or open it out to 36 cm for a wide one and then leave it alone. Nothing to re-adjust every time you swap candles.

Taper™ Candle Warmer Lamp with labelled fluted glass shade, adjustable arm and weighted metal base

Dim it, then forget it

Four brightness levels and a 24-hour timer, both on the cord. Take it to the lowest setting and it reads as a bedside lamp; set the timer once and it comes on at the same hour the next evening without being touched.

Finally, no black ring on the ceiling

I had a candle in the same spot for two years and the plaster above it went grey. This has been running most evenings for a month and there is nothing on the ceiling at all. The scent is quieter than a flame for the first ten minutes and then it fills the room properly. The jar lasts far longer too — I am maybe a third of the way through one that would have been gone by now.

Check your jar diameter first

The base plate is about 13 cm and my favourite three-wick is 11 cm, so it fits but only just — a wider tin would not. The gooseneck raises high enough for a tall apothecary jar, which is what I mainly use it for now. Solidly built, heavier base than I expected, and the glass shade is proper glass rather than the acrylic I was braced for.

The timer is the reason I kept it

Set it to four hours and it does the same thing the next night without me touching it. I use the lowest dim setting as a bedside light and the fluted glass throws a nice pattern up the wall. One warning: the bulb gets genuinely hot, so do not grab the shade straight after switching it off.

Frequently asked questions

Does the candle actually light?
No — the wick stays dry. A halogen bulb in the shade sits above the jar and warms the wax from the surface down, so you get a melt pool and the fragrance without a flame, without soot, and without a burning wick to remember to blow out. It is why people use these near curtains, in a nursery, or in a rental where an open flame is not allowed.
Will my candle fit?
The base plate is 13 cm across, the shade is 8 cm, and the stem telescopes to 36 cm at its tallest. In practice that covers most standard jar candles up to about 12 cm wide — single-wick apothecary jars, tins, and the majority of three-wicks. If your candle is wider than the base plate it will overhang the heated area and melt unevenly, so measure the jar rather than guessing.
How long until the wax melts?
At the highest setting, roughly fifteen to twenty minutes for the surface to go liquid, and a little longer for a full edge-to-edge pool on a wide candle. The lower dim settings take longer and give a gentler scent throw, which is usually what you want in a bedroom. If you want it faster, telescope the stem down so the shade sits closer to the wax.
What does the timer do?
It is a 24-hour cycle timer with 2, 4, 8 and 10-hour presets on the inline controller. Set it once and the lamp switches itself off after that many hours, then comes back on at the same time the following day. Useful if you want the room to already smell like something by the time you walk in, without leaving anything burning while you are out.
Does it come with a bulb?
Yes — the halogen bulb is fitted in the shade, and it is a standard replaceable type so you are not tied to us when it eventually goes. Do not swap it for an LED: an LED runs cool, so it will light the candle beautifully and never melt it. The heat is the whole point of the bulb here, not the brightness.
Which plug does it come with?
A US plug, and the lamp is rated 100–127 V. If you are outside North America you will need a step-down transformer rather than a simple pin adaptor, because the voltage matters on this one — an adaptor alone would put 230 V through a 110 V bulb. We would rather say that plainly now than have it arrive and fail on the first evening.
