Love the scent, not the flame? A candle warmer lamp melts your candle from above with a halogen bulb, so the wick never lights — no flame, no soot, and the fragrance is released rather than burned off.

The gooseneck reaches 36 cm at full height: a weighted 13 cm matte-black steel base, a telescopic stem curving over into a fixed arm, and a ribbed pressed-glass shade hanging directly above the jar. Four brightness levels and a 24-hour cycle timer live on the inline controller.

Overview

A candle warmer lamp does one thing that a match cannot: it melts the wax from above, with heat and light and no fire. The wick is never lit. Nothing burns, so no soot rises from the jar to settle on the ceiling, and the fragrance oils that a flame would destroy are released intact.

That surprises most people. A lit candle quietly burns a good part of what you paid for, because the flame is much hotter than the wax needs, and the top notes go with it. A halogen bulb held a few centimetres above the surface warms the pool to a fraction of that temperature: hot enough to release the fragrance and cool enough to leave it whole. The scent is softer for the first ten minutes and then carries on, long after a burning candle would have faded.

The lamp is a gooseneck: a weighted 13 cm disc of matte black steel, a telescopic stem rising from the back of it, and a fixed curved arm that carries the shade over the centre of the base, directly above the jar. Because the stem telescopes, you set the gap yourself, low for a tall apothecary jar and up to the full 36 cm for a wide three-wick candle. The shade is real ribbed pressed glass with a scalloped rim, not acrylic, and its flutes break the light into fine vertical lines and not one flat wash.

On the lead is a rotary controller with three functions: on/off, a dimmer with four levels and a 24-hour cycle timer set at 2, 4, 8 or 10 hours. Dimmed right down it is a bedside lamp that also scents the room, and at full power it takes fifteen to twenty minutes to open a melt pool. It runs from a standard socket and comes with the halogen bulb fitted.

Care

Let it cool before moving it. The shade is directly over the heat and the glass stays warm for several minutes after the bulb goes off, so wait ten before handling the top. Wipe the glass with a dry microfibre cloth. If wax ever spits onto it, warm the shade briefly and lift the wax off with a paper towel; do not scrape it cold. Keep water off the disc base and the inline controller, and wipe the steel dry without glass cleaner. Do not leave it running unattended overnight, and do not put a candle wider than the base plate on it: the edges will not melt and the jar will not sit flat.

Heat in place of a flame

A halogen bulb sits directly over the wax and melts the pool from the surface down, so the wick is never lit and no soot comes off the jarThe stem telescopes and the arm keeps its position, so you set the gap between shade and wax once: close for a tall apothecary jar, open for a wide three-wick candleAn inline rotary controller dims the bulb through four levels and runs a 24-hour cycle timer at 2, 4, 8 or 10 hours, so it repeats the next evening without resetting

The scent survives melting

A flame burns away a good part of what you paid for. Warming the pool from above releases the same fragrance without burning it, so the scent starts more softly and lasts long after a lit candle would have faded, and the jar lasts much longer.

Adjusting the telescopic stem of the Taper™ Candle Warmer Lamp on a bedside table

Set the height one time

The stem telescopes and the arm keeps its position, so you close the gap for a tall jar or open it to 36 cm for a wide one, and then leave it. There is nothing to adjust each time you change candles.

Dim it and forget it

Four brightness levels and a 24-hour timer, both on the cord. At the lowest level it serves as a bedside lamp, and once the timer is set it comes on at the same hour the next evening untouched.

Finally, no black ring on the ceiling

I had a candle in the same spot for two years and the plaster above it went grey. This has been running most evenings for a month and there is nothing on the ceiling at all. The scent is quieter than a flame for the first ten minutes and then it fills the room properly. The jar lasts far longer too — I am maybe a third of the way through one that would have been gone by now.

Check your jar diameter first

The base plate is about 13 cm and my favourite three-wick is 11 cm, so it fits but only just — a wider tin would not. The gooseneck raises high enough for a tall apothecary jar, which is what I mainly use it for now. Solidly built, heavier base than I expected, and the glass shade is proper glass rather than the acrylic I was braced for.

The timer is the reason I kept it

Set it to four hours and it does the same thing the next night without me touching it. I use the lowest dim setting as a bedside light and the fluted glass throws a nice pattern up the wall. One warning: the bulb gets genuinely hot, so do not grab the shade straight after switching it off.

Frequently asked questions

Is the candle actually lit?
No, the wick stays dry. A halogen bulb in the shade sits above the jar and warms the wax from the surface down, so you get a melt pool and the fragrance with no flame, no soot and no burning wick to remember. That is why people use these near curtains, in a nursery or in a rental where open flames are not allowed.
Does my candle fit?
The base plate is 13 cm across, the shade is 8 cm, and the stem telescopes to 36 cm at its tallest. In practice that takes most standard jar candles up to about 12 cm wide: single-wick apothecary jars, tins and most three-wick candles. A candle wider than the base plate overhangs the heated area and melts unevenly, so measure the jar; do not guess.
How long does the wax take to melt?
On the highest setting, about fifteen to twenty minutes for the surface to turn liquid, and a little longer for a pool that reaches the edges of a wide candle. The lower settings take longer and give a gentler scent, which is usually right for a bedroom. To speed it up, lower the stem so that the shade is closer to the wax.
What is the timer for?
It is a 24-hour cycle timer with presets of 2, 4, 8 and 10 hours on the inline controller. Set it once and the lamp turns itself off after that many hours, then comes on again at the same time the next day. It is useful if you want the room scented when you walk in, with nothing left burning while you are out.
Is a bulb supplied with it?
Yes. The halogen bulb is fitted in the shade, and it is a standard replaceable type, so a replacement is easy to find when it eventually fails. Do not replace it with an LED: an LED runs cool, so it would light the candle well and never melt it. Here the bulb is for heat, not brightness.
Which plug is fitted?
A US plug, and the lamp is rated 100–127 V. Outside North America you need a step-down transformer and not just a pin adaptor, because the voltage matters here: an adaptor alone would put 230 V through a 110 V bulb. We prefer to say so plainly now than have it arrive and fail on the first evening.
