You take your rings off on the edge of the basin, or the windowsill, or you put them down on the nightstand and forget which side. Everyone who wears a ring has had the ten minutes of lifting cushions. The fix is not a jewellery box, which is too big and lives in a drawer and therefore never gets used. The fix is one small thing, always in the same spot, that the ring goes into without you thinking about it.

Thimble™ is 4.5 cm across — about the width of a walnut, small enough to disappear on a shelf and heavy enough that it doesn't skid when you drop something into it. Solid brass, so it has real weight for its size, and the inside is turned smooth with a flat base so a ring lies flat and a stud doesn't lodge in a corner. A single turned lip runs round the rim, which is what your fingers find in the dark.

Around the outside, rows of traditional blessing characters are cast in low relief — the same character repeated in many forms, which is how these little vessels have been made for a long time. It is not printed or etched on: the relief is in the casting, so it will not wear off with handling, and each raised character catches the light differently as you turn it.

A dry soft cloth is all it wants. Avoid brass polish and any abrasive cream — the compound packs into the cast relief and dulls the characters, which is the one part of it you cannot get back. Don't put it in the dishwasher and don't leave it standing in water; if it lives on a bathroom shelf, dry it after a steamy shower rather than letting droplets sit, because standing moisture is what spots brass. Some darkening in the first year is normal, particularly around the rim where your fingers go, and most people prefer it once it has settled. If you want the brightness back, a little lemon juice on a cloth followed by a thorough dry will lift it without cutting the surface. It is decorative rather than tableware — don't eat or drink out of it.
