End-of-day clutter deserves a landing spot that looks deliberate. This small brass decorative bowl, 4.5 cm across, is where your rings, studs and spare key go instead of the edge of the sink.

Rows of blessing characters are cast in low relief around the belly, and a turned foot ring lifts it neatly on any surface. Small enough to sit in your palm, it works as a catch-all by the door or a quiet detail on the dresser.

  • Solid brass, 4.5 cm across
  • Blessing characters cast in low relief
  • Turned foot ring
  • Palm-sized, easy to keep close

Overview

You take your rings off at the edge of the basin or on the windowsill, or you put them on the nightstand and forget which side. Everyone who wears a ring has spent ten minutes lifting cushions. A jewellery box is not the answer, because it is too big, lives in a drawer and so is never used. The answer is one small thing, always in the same place, that the ring goes into without thought.

Tarn™ is 4.5 cm across, about the width of a walnut: small enough to go unnoticed on a shelf and heavy enough not to skid when something is dropped in. It is solid brass, so it has real weight for its size, and the inside is turned smooth with a flat base, so a ring lies flat and a stud does not catch in a corner. One turned lip runs round the rim, and that is what your fingers find in the dark.

Round the outside, rows of traditional blessing characters are cast in low relief, the same character in many forms, which is how these small vessels have long been made. The relief is not printed or etched but part of the casting, so it does not wear off with handling, and each raised character catches the light differently as you turn the bowl.

Where people keep it: a bathroom shelf for rings, an entry console for a spare key, a nightstand for studs, a desk for paper clips, an altar or shelf for a pinch of incense ash. There is one size, because at this scale only one size makes sense.

Care

A soft, dry cloth is all it needs. Avoid brass polish and abrasive creams: the compound packs into the cast relief and dulls the characters, and that cannot be undone. Do not put it in the dishwasher or leave it standing in water. On a bathroom shelf, dry it after a steamy shower so that droplets do not sit, because standing moisture is what spots brass. Some darkening in the first year is normal, especially round the rim where your fingers go, and most people prefer it once it has settled. To restore the brightness, a little lemon juice on a cloth and a thorough drying lift it without cutting the surface. It is decorative and not tableware, so do not eat or drink from it.

Materials

Solid cast brass with a satin-polished finish, a turned lip at the rim, an interior smoothed on a lathe and a small turned foot ring underneath, so that it sits level with the base clear of the surface. Verified size from the supplier's own variant listing: 4.5 cm across the mouth, about 3 cm tall and 18 g, so it sits comfortably in the hollow of a palm. The blessing characters are cast into the wall in low relief and not printed or acid-etched, so they cannot rub away. The brass has no lacquer and slowly deepens in colour where it is handled.

Small on purpose

At only 4.5 cm wide it fits wherever your rings naturally come off, so the habit takes no effort.Made of solid brass, with a reassuring weight that keeps it firmly in place.Raised blessing characters are cast into the brass, a lasting detail that does not wear away.

Thimble™ on an oak console holding two rings and a brass key

One small thing that stays in one place

On an entry console it holds the spare key and the ring you take off on the way in. On a basin shelf it holds studs. It works because it is small enough to stay permanently where you already empty your hands, which a jewellery box in a drawer never is.

Thimble™ resting in an open palm while a ring is lowered into it, showing its true 4.5 cm size

It sits in your palm

4.5 cm across and 18 g, about the size of a walnut. It is worth picturing at true scale before you order, because photographs make every brass bowl look like a serving dish. This is a ring dish, heavy enough for its size not to slide.

Thimble™ detail — solid brass, turned lip and cast relief characters

Cast into the metal, not printed

Rows of traditional blessing characters stand out from the wall in raised relief, formed in the casting and not etched or printed afterwards. They catch the light as you turn the bowl and will still be there in twenty years. The rim has a turned lip and the base a small foot ring.

I have stopped losing my wedding ring

I take it off to wash up and it used to end up anywhere. This sits on the windowsill above the sink and the ring goes in it every time now, purely because it is right there. It is genuinely tiny — I'd read the measurement and still slightly surprised myself — but that's exactly why it fits on a sill where nothing else would. Heavier than it looks.

Lovely detail for the money

The characters are properly raised, you can feel them under your thumb, and they're crisper than I expected on something this small. I use it on my desk for paperclips and a spare set of keys. Only note is it is unlacquered so it does dull a bit where you handle it — I left mine alone and it's gone a warmer colour that I like more than the shiny finish it arrived with.

Bought three, gave two away

Ordered one to try, liked it enough to order two more as small gifts and both went down well — it's the sort of thing people don't buy for themselves. Do check the size expectations if you're gifting: one friend assumed it was a trinket dish for a necklace and it won't take much more than a couple of rings. For rings and studs it's perfect.

Frequently asked questions

How small is it in practice?
4.5 cm across the mouth, about 3 cm tall and 18 g: roughly a walnut, sitting in the hollow of your palm with room to spare. That is the one point to be clear about, because photographs flatter the size of brass bowls. It holds a few rings, a pair of studs, a spare key or a small handful of paper clips. It will not hold a necklace, a watch or loose change in any quantity.
What do the characters on the outside mean?
They are traditional Chinese blessing characters in an older seal-script style, repeated in many forms around the belly; the idea is many blessings gathered in one small vessel. It is a long-established motif on cast brass bowls of this kind. If you want a plain vessel with no lettering, choose something else, because the relief is part of the casting and is the main decoration.
Is the brass solid rather than plating?
Solid cast brass throughout, with a satin polish and no lacquer. The weight shows it: 18 g in something this small feels dense in the hand as plated steel does not. Being solid and not plated, it has no coating to chip or flake at an edge; it slowly deepens in colour where you handle it.
Does it tarnish in a bathroom?
It darkens over months, and a steamy bathroom speeds that up. Most people come to like it: the colour grows warmer and the cast characters show more clearly once the factory brightness has gone. Do not leave water standing on it, because droplets that dry there spot unevenly; wipe it after a long shower. To bring the brightness back, use lemon juice on a cloth and dry it thoroughly. Please do not use brass polish, because the compound clogs the relief.
Can it scratch a ring or a stone?
The inside is turned smooth on a lathe, with no cast texture and no sharp seam, so it is gentler on a band than a ceramic dish with an unglazed base. Brass is softer than gold alloys, platinum, silver and any gemstone you are likely to own, so it does not scratch them; the bowl takes the marks. Even so, do not tip several pieces in together and shake them, because jewellery scratches jewellery whatever it sits in.
Can it hold food, salt or incense?
Treat it as decorative and not as tableware. Do not eat or drink from it, and do not keep salt in it, because salt corrodes brass and pits the inside. Incense ash is fine and is a common use for a bowl of this shape; brush it out with a dry brush and do not wash it. A tealight is a bad idea, because brass conducts heat straight to the surface it stands on.
