How to Open and Close an Umbrella: Manual, Compact and Automatic
Share
Calm Eden Journal · Updated October 22, 2026
To open an umbrella, point it away from people, unfasten the strap, then push the runner up the shaft until it clicks (manual) or press the button (automatic). To close it, release the spring or press the button, let the canopy fold, push a telescoping shaft down until it locks, then smooth the fabric and fasten the strap. Never force a stuck mechanism, and keep the canopy pointed away from faces, because automatic umbrellas open quickly.
Before you open it
An umbrella is a simple machine. Britannica describes the modern one as a circular screen of fabric stretched over hinged ribs that radiate from a central pole, and the hinged ribs are what let it open and close. A few habits make opening it easier and safer, whichever type you own.
- Make space. The canopy sweeps a wide circle when it opens, so step away from people, doors and shelves.
- Point it away. Keep the tip and the canopy angled away from faces, yours included.
- Undo the strap. A hook-and-loop strap or button still fastened can stop an umbrella opening.
- Check the panels. One manufacturer’s instruction sheet says to make sure the panels are not stuck together and to shake the umbrella so the ribs do not open inverted.
Not sure what the parts are called? Parts of an umbrella names the runner, springs, shaft and ferrule used in the steps below. Here is the whole picture first.
| Type | To open | To close | Hands |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual stick | Push the runner up the shaft until the top spring clicks. | Press the spring, then slide the runner down. | Two |
| Manual compact | Extend the telescoping shaft until it locks, then push the runner up until the spring clicks. | Release the spring, slide the runner down, then push the shaft sections back in. | Two |
| Auto-open only | Press the button with the canopy facing away from you. | Close it by hand, as on a manual umbrella. | One to open, two to close |
| Fully automatic (open-close button) | Press the button. | Press the button again. Some models then need the shaft pushed down until it locks. | One for the button; some models need a second hand to lock the shaft |
Manual stick umbrella
A manual stick umbrella has a long, fixed shaft and a runner you move by hand.
To open
- Unfasten the strap and hold the shaft with the tip pointing up and away from you.
- Push the runner up the shaft with your other hand until the top spring clicks into place.
- Check the canopy is fully open and the ribs are even.
To close
- Shake off excess water.
- Press the spring that holds the runner at the top.
- Slide the runner down the shaft and keep the ribs together as the canopy folds.
- Smooth and wrap the canopy, then fasten the strap (see the folding steps below).
Manual compact umbrella
A manual compact umbrella works like a stick umbrella, with one extra step: most have a shaft that telescopes in two or three sections so the umbrella folds short. Models differ, so treat these steps as the general pattern and follow your maker’s instructions if they differ.
To open
- Unfasten the strap and extend the shaft until each section locks.
- Push the runner up until the top spring clicks.
To close
- Press the spring, slide the runner down and let the canopy fold.
- Release the shaft sections and push them back in until each one locks.
- Wrap the canopy and fasten the strap.
If you carry a compact umbrella every day, our small folding umbrella guide explains what to look for in the mechanism and the folded size.
Automatic umbrellas (open-close button)
There are two kinds. An auto-open umbrella opens with a button but is closed by hand. A fully automatic one uses the button to open and to close. Our automatic vs manual umbrella guide compares the types in detail.
The last step varies by model, so treat what follows as examples of how makers describe it. One manufacturer’s sheet for a reverse-closing automatic umbrella, where the wet side folds inward, gives this sequence:
- Unwrap the hook-and-loop strap and check the panels are not stuck together. Shake the umbrella.
- With the umbrella facing away from you, press the button on the handle. Use caution, because it opens quickly.
- To close it, press the close button and the umbrella closes automatically.
- To fully close it, hold it horizontally and push the spring-loaded handle inward until it locks.
A second manufacturer, for a folding automatic with a vented double canopy, says to click the open and close button so the umbrella folds, then hold the handle with one hand and push down with the other until you hear the locking click at the bottom. It also warns against closing the umbrella by hand, by catching the internal runner and pushing it back down, because that can harm the mechanism and hurt your hand.
The common pattern
- Face the canopy away from you and others, then press the button to open.
- Press the button again to close.
- Check whether your model needs the shaft pushed down or the handle pressed in until it locks.
- Wrap the canopy and fasten the strap.
How to fold and wrap the canopy neatly
A tidy fold takes ten seconds and makes the umbrella easier to carry and to slide into a sleeve.
- Drain it. Shake off the excess water. One manufacturer’s sheet says to drain captured water before wrapping the strap.
- Spread the panels. Hold the closed umbrella by the handle and let the fabric panels hang evenly between the ribs.
- Smooth and gather. Run your hand down each panel so the folds lie flat against the ribs, then hold the bundle together.
- Wrap. Wrap the fabric around the ribs in the direction the panels naturally fold, keeping the wrap snug so it fits your bag.
- Fasten. Close the strap or button around the middle so it is firm without squeezing the ribs.
If the umbrella is wet, do not seal it into a sleeve or bag. Open it somewhere safe to dry first; our care guide explains how, and the sleeve guide covers storing a damp one.
When it is stuck
The rule is the same for every type: if you have to force it, something is caught. Stop, look, and fix the cause instead of pushing harder.
| What is happening | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| It will not open | Panels stuck together, a strap still fastened, or fabric caught between ribs. | Unfasten the strap, free the fabric, shake the umbrella and try again gently. |
| It opens inside out | Ribs that have stiffened after a long time folded, or a strong gust. | Close it and reopen it. One manufacturer says an umbrella that opens inverted is not broken and that closing and reopening corrects the ribs. In wind, see the windproof umbrella guide. |
| The button does nothing | A shaft that is not fully locked, or fabric caught in the mechanism. | Check the shaft has locked after the last closing, clear any fabric, then press again. Do not pry at the button. |
| It will not close | Fabric caught, or the shaft not yet pushed down to its lock. | Press the button again and clear any fabric. On the model one maker describes, you hold the handle and push down with your other hand until you hear the locking click. Do not pull the internal runner down by hand. |
| A rib looks bent or a joint is loose | Wind damage or force. | Stop using it. This is a repair, warranty or replacement matter, not something to force. |
If none of that works, contact the maker or the shop. A warranty exists for exactly this.
Safety: points, springs and other people
- Aim it away. Always point the canopy away from faces before you press or push.
- Respect the speed. Automatic umbrellas open quickly. One maker’s sheet tells users to use caution for that reason.
- Keep fingers clear. Keep them away from the runner, the springs and the joints while you close it, and do not pull the internal runner by hand.
- Close it early. Close it before a doorway, a bus or a crowded pavement, so the ribs do not catch someone.
- Use it for rain and sun only. In a thunderstorm, put it away and go indoors.

Frequently asked questions
How do you close an umbrella?
For a manual umbrella, press the spring that holds the runner at the top and slide the runner down so the canopy folds. For an automatic umbrella, press the button. Then push down a telescoping shaft until it locks if your model has one, smooth the fabric and fasten the strap.
How do I close an automatic umbrella?
Press the open-close button and the canopy folds. Some models then need you to push the shaft down, or press the handle inward, until it locks with a click. One maker also warns against pulling the internal runner down by hand because it can damage the mechanism and hurt your hand.
How do I open an umbrella?
Unfasten the strap, point the umbrella away from people, then push the runner up the shaft until the top spring clicks, or press the button if it is automatic.
How do I open an automatic umbrella safely?
Unwrap the strap, check the panels are not stuck together, hold it facing away from you and anyone nearby, then press the button. A manufacturer’s sheet notes that it opens quickly, so use caution.
How do I fold an umbrella neatly?
Drain the water, let the panels hang evenly, smooth them flat against the ribs, wrap the fabric snugly around the umbrella in the direction it naturally folds and close the strap. If it is wet, open it to dry before you put it in a sleeve.
What should I do if my umbrella is stuck?
Do not force it. Free any fabric caught between the ribs, make sure the strap is off and the shaft is fully locked, and try again gently. If a rib or joint is bent, stop and contact the maker or shop.
Why does my umbrella open inside out?
A strong gust is the usual cause, and ribs that have stiffened after a long time folded can also open inverted. One manufacturer says this does not mean the umbrella is broken; close it and reopen it to correct the ribs.
