Haven umbrella canopy rated UPF 50+ for sun and rain

Parasol vs Umbrella: What Each Word Means and What to Buy

Calm Eden Journal · Updated October 9, 2026

Short answer

A parasol is traditionally a light sunshade, while an umbrella now usually means a rain umbrella. Shops also call a hand umbrella with a rated canopy a sun umbrella, UV umbrella or UPF umbrella. Garden and beach parasols are a different product: large, and fixed on a pole or base.

Parasol vs umbrella: where the words come from

Parasol comes from words meaning "against the sun". Traditionally it means a light sunshade. Umbrella comes from the Latin for shade. In everyday English it now usually means a rain umbrella.

So the two words started with the same job, which was shade, and drifted apart. Today people use them loosely. Someone who says parasol often pictures something light, made for sun. Someone who says umbrella usually pictures something for rain. Neither word tells you how a particular product is made.

Other languages split things differently. In Japan, higasa is the word for a sun parasol, and our Japanese umbrella guide covers Japanese parasols and light folding designs.

This is why a specification matters more than a name. To know what a canopy does, read the stated rating, the lining, the size open and the size folded. The names below show what you will meet in shops and search results.

What is a sun umbrella called?

There is no single name. Shops use several for the same idea: a hand umbrella made to shade you from direct sun.

  • Sun umbrella: the plain description.
  • UV umbrella: stresses UV. Look for the stated rating behind the name.
  • UPF umbrella: says the canopy fabric carries a UPF rating.
  • Sun parasol or UV parasol: the traditional word, used for the same kind of hand-held shade.
  • Umbrella for the sun: a descriptive phrase, not a product category.

All of these can describe a compact folding umbrella, and none of them guarantees a rating. UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) is a fabric rating. UPF 50 means one fiftieth of UV reaches through the fabric, and UPF 50+ is the top labelling category. The sun umbrella guide goes further into reading that number.

Parasol, umbrella, sun umbrella and garden parasol compared

This table shows what each name usually means. Treat it as a guide to shop language, not a set of strict rules.

Name What it usually means How it is used What to check
Parasol A light sunshade; the traditional word Often hand-held Whether it states a rating or only offers shade
Umbrella In everyday English, a rain umbrella Hand-held, often folding Whether the canopy is water-repellent and rated
Sun umbrella or UV umbrella A hand umbrella with a rated canopy Hand-held, often compact The stated UPF rating and the lining
Garden or beach parasol A large shade on a pole or base Fixed in place, not carried Stand, base and canopy size

Read across a row, not down a column. A UV umbrella can also work in rain, and a parasol can be a hand umbrella. What matters is the detail in the listing, because the word on the front is only a starting point.

Garden and beach parasols are a different product

Garden and beach parasols are large. They sit on a pole or a base and stay in one place. They suit patios, lawns and beaches, where you set the shade up and leave it. You do not carry one to the shops.

A hand umbrella works the other way round, because it moves with you. That changes what matters: folded length, weight, how quickly it opens and where it goes when you close it. If you searched for a sun parasol to carry on walks, you want a hand umbrella, not a garden shade.

The same thinking applies when you compare a rain umbrella with a sun umbrella. A rain umbrella may be a full-size stick that does not fold. A sun umbrella for daily use is more often compact. The mini vs compact guide explains folded sizes in detail.

What to check before you buy an umbrella for the sun

Whatever the product is called, work through the same list.

  1. A stated UPF rating for the canopy fabric. A name such as UV parasol is not a rating.
  2. A lining or coating. A black under-layer or a reflective coating cuts the light passing through the fabric. The coating guide compares the two.
  3. Open width, so you know how much shade to expect.
  4. Folded length and weight, if you will carry it every day.
  5. How it opens and closes. A one-press automatic umbrella is easy when your other hand is full.
  6. Rain use. If you want one umbrella for both, look for a water-repellent canopy and read the frame's stated limits.

An umbrella shades direct sun only. UV also reflects off ground, water and buildings, so a canopy rating describes the fabric and not everything around you.

How Haven fits

The Haven Umbrella is a hand umbrella, not a garden shade. It is a compact folding umbrella with automatic open and close: one press opens it and one press closes it. The canopy is water-repellent pongee with a black UV-blocking under-layer, rated UPF 50+. Haven blocks 99% of UV and is up to 15°F (8°C) cooler under the canopy. It folds to 40 cm long and 5 cm wide, weighs about 390 g and is about 105 cm across when open. It comes in six colours, with free shipping on every order and a 30-day risk-free trial. Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a parasol and an umbrella?

A parasol is traditionally a light sunshade, from words meaning against the sun. Umbrella comes from the Latin for shade and now usually means a rain umbrella. Today the words overlap, so read the specification instead.

What is a sun umbrella called?

Shops use sun umbrella, UV umbrella, UPF umbrella and sun parasol for a hand umbrella made to shade you from direct sun. The name does not guarantee a rating, so look for a stated UPF number.

Is a UV parasol the same as a UV umbrella?

Usually yes. Both describe a hand-held shade with a canopy meant to reduce UV. Parasol is the traditional word for a sunshade. Check the stated UPF rating and lining in either case.

Can I use a rain umbrella as a parasol?

You can use any umbrella for shade from direct sun, but a rain umbrella may not state a rating. The Haven Umbrella is rated UPF 50+, blocks 99% of UV and is up to 15°F (8°C) cooler under the canopy.

Is a garden parasol a sun umbrella?

Not in the hand-umbrella sense. Garden and beach parasols are large and sit on a pole or base. A sun umbrella for walking is a hand umbrella you carry and fold.

Calm Eden sells the Haven Umbrella mentioned here. Product details come from our own listing; we have not lab-tested other umbrellas. UPF describes fabric, not a health outcome: an umbrella shades direct sun but not light reflected from the ground, so treat this guide as general information, not medical advice.
