How to choose a pillow: size, loft and fill
Choosing a pillow comes down to three things: the right height for your sleeping position, the feel you find comfortable, and materials you can actually clean and live with. This guide walks through each, then points you to current options.
Start with height (loft)
Pillow height is measured after your head compresses the pillow, not on the shelf. Side sleepers usually need more height to fill the gap above the shoulder; back sleepers need less; stomach sleepers the least. A soft mattress lets the shoulder sink, so you need less height; a firm mattress, a little more. Use our free pillow size guide and check the compressed height on your own bed.
Then choose the fill
| Fill | Feel | Care |
|---|---|---|
| Memory foam (solid) | Steady, supportive | Usually spot-clean only |
| Shredded foam | Adjustable | Top up over time |
| Down alternative | Soft, light | Often machine washable |
| Latex | Bouncy, firm | Long-lasting |
Size and shape
Standard, queen and king refer to pillow dimensions; a king pillow can crowd a queen bed if you use two. Contoured pillows add a neck lobe; check it suits your proportions. Adjustable pillows let you add or remove fill.
Check care and returns before buying
Read the care label: solid foam generally should not be machine washed, while removable covers often can. Pillows and bedding come with a 30-day risk-free trial: if one is not right for you, tell us within 30 days of delivery and return it for a refund, opened or used. See our refund policy for damaged, defective or incorrect-item claims and return instructions. Every pillow on our store lists its construction and care so you can compare. Nothing here is medical advice: if neck pain persists, seek professional advice.
