Overview

Most wind-downs fail on friction. The candle ends up in a drawer, the app wants a subscription, and by Thursday you have stopped.

Chant sits on the nightstand and takes one movement. Draw the mallet round the rim and the note builds, then fades over several long seconds — long enough that your breathing slows to meet it.

Care

A dry soft cloth is all it needs. The metal is unlacquered, so it darkens gently with handling — most owners leave it exactly there, and a little lemon juice on a cloth brings the brightness back if you prefer. Spot-clean the cushion.

Materials

Copper alloy with a deep dimpled wall, finished in a warm brass-gold satin and left unlacquered so it patinas with handling.

Small enough to stay out

It reads as a warm brass object on a nightstand rather than a piece of wellness kit. Left out where you can see it, you reach for it.

A hand drawing the suede-headed mallet slowly around the outside of the bowl's rim to make it ring

How to play it

Cushion down, slow circle

Rest the bowl in the cushion, hold the mallet loosely, and draw the suede end round the outside of the rim just below the lip. It catches within a lap or so, then carries itself. Slower and lighter than feels natural is the whole technique.

Complete set

Three pieces, nothing to buy

Bowl, mallet and cushion arrive together, so it works the evening it lands. The three turned rings below the rim give the mallet a track to ride, and the dimpled wall below them is what gives the note its long, beating tail.

Small enough that I actually use it

It is genuinely teacup-sized, and that turned out to be exactly why it has stuck. Three weeks in it is the only wind-down thing I have kept up, because it lives on the nightstand and I never have to go and fetch it. Takes a lap and a half round the rim before it catches, then it holds on its own.

The cushion does real work

I had a bowl years ago that I stood straight on a dresser and it always sounded choked. Resting this one in the little red cushion makes an obvious difference — it rings on for a good few seconds longer. The red is properly rich in person, deeper than a styled photo, and it looks great against oak.

The dimpling is deep

The dimple pattern on mine runs right up the wall and catches the light differently at every angle. The suede on the mallet is holding up well after a couple of months, and the metal has gone slightly warmer where my fingers sit. I have left it exactly as it is.

Frequently asked questions

How big is it?
Palm-sized — closer to a teacup than a serving bowl, at 8.4 cm across the belly. That is the point: it lives on a nightstand and gets used every day. Full measurements are in the product info above.
How do I play it?
Rest the bowl in the cushion, hold the mallet loosely, and draw the suede end slowly round the outside of the rim just below the lip with light, even pressure. It catches within a lap or two, then the note builds and holds on its own. Slower and lighter than feels natural is the whole trick.
Is it copper or brass?
A copper alloy rather than pure copper — the bell-metal family, which is what lets it ring rather than thud. The finish is a warm brass-gold satin, so it reads as brass to the eye, and it is left unlacquered so nothing damps the note.
What comes with it?
Three pieces, and everything you need: the copper-alloy bowl, a 13 cm turned wooden mallet with a matte black suede striking end, and a 7.6 cm brocade ring cushion in red with gold cloud-scroll embroidery. You can play it the evening it arrives.
Will mine look exactly like the photos?
Close. The dimple pattern and its depth vary a little from bowl to bowl, and so does the exact pitch — two bowls this size sit near each other rather than matching perfectly. The metal tone runs from a paler yellow to a warmer bronze between batches.
