Overview

A garden can be finished and still be silent — the pots in the right corner, the gravel raked, the olive settled — and then you sit in it on a warm evening with nothing to listen to but traffic and someone's extractor fan.

Toll gives the wind something to do out there. It is closer to a bell on a sheep in a field than to anything tuned — a soft, unhurried sound that comes and goes with the air rather than a tune running up and down a scale.

Care

Hang it and leave it alone — the weathering is the point. If leaf litter or cobwebs build up in the cups, a rinse from the hose and a shake clears them. The bare metal will darken unevenly, brighter where rain runs off and browner in the crevices; that is normal and it is what makes it look like it has been on that eave for years. If you want it bright again you can bring the shine back with a soft cloth and a little metal polish, but you will be starting the patina over — and never use wire wool or a scouring pad, which will score the satin finish permanently. Take it down before a genuine storm; 100 g of bells on thin cord is happier off the hook in a gale. After several seasons outdoors the cord will eventually stiffen and fray — re-thread the bells onto fresh 1–2 mm cord and it carries on.

The corner of a terrace, the gap between the house and the wall, a gable end, the underside of an eave — anywhere the air genuinely moves rather than a sheltered spot where it will only sound when you touch it. On a plaited loop, one small hook is the whole installation.

Bare metal, no lacquer. The first summer takes the shine off, the first winter starts the honey-brown, and by the second year there is green sitting in the relief of the crown bell. The tone dries out and drops slightly as it weathers — it sounds older too.
