Why it rings the way it does is in how it is made. The bowl is solid brass, hammered by hand — you can see and feel the dimples across the belly, no two identical. That worked surface is not decoration: hammering stresses and thins the metal unevenly, and it is that irregularity that gives a bowl its long, slightly beating tone instead of the short flat clang of a machine-spun one. Two fine rings are turned below the rim on a lathe, which is where the striker rides.

Care

Wipe it with a dry soft cloth and leave it at that. Do not use brass polish or any abrasive cream: polishing compound fills the hammer dimples, dulls the surface unevenly and takes the edge off the tone. Never put it in water or a dishwasher — it is an instrument, not tableware — and dry it immediately if it gets splashed, because standing moisture will spot the brass. Some darkening over the first year is normal and most owners come to prefer it; if you want the brightness back, a little lemon juice on a cloth followed by a thorough dry is enough. Store the striker with the bowl rather than in a drawer, and keep the bowl off stone or tile where a knock could dent the rim.

Does the striker come with it?
Yes — a turned hardwood striker, roughly 12 cm long, is included with both sizes. It is bare wood rather than felt or suede-covered, which is deliberate: wood grips the brass and gets the bowl singing, where a soft head is better for a single strike but tends to slip if you are running it round the rim.
I can't get it to sing, only click. What am I doing wrong?
Almost always one of three things. First, you are gripping it — rest it flat on an open palm, because fingers wrapped round the outside damp the vibration before it can build. Second, you are going too fast; a slow, steady circle works and a quick scrub doesn't. Third, you are pressing too hard. Light, even pressure on the outside of the rim, just below the lip. It usually takes a couple of laps to catch, then it sustains itself and you can ease off.
How long does the note actually last?
Struck once and left to ring, expect somewhere around twenty seconds from the 11 cm and a little longer from the 12 cm before it drops below what you can hear in a quiet room. Run round the rim continuously and it will hold indefinitely, as long as you keep the striker moving. Hard surfaces make it sound longer and soft furnishings shorter, so it will ring on for longer on a wooden table than on a rug.
Will the brass tarnish, and can I polish it?
It will darken slowly, particularly where your hands hold it, because the brass is left unlacquered on purpose — a lacquer film would damp the ring. Please don't use brass polish or any abrasive cream: the compound packs into the hammer dimples, dulls them unevenly and takes the life out of the tone. A dry cloth is all it needs. If you really want the brightness back, a little lemon juice on a cloth and then a thorough dry will do it without cutting the surface.
Is every bowl the same, or do they vary?
They vary, and that is inherent to the method. Each one is hammered by hand, so the pattern and depth of the dimples differ from bowl to bowl and so does the exact pitch — two bowls of the same size will sit close to one another but won't be identical. Colour varies slightly too, from a paler yellow brass to a warmer bronze tone depending on the batch. If you need two that match for a set, the fair expectation is close, not identical.
