Overview

There is nowhere to put the mug. The coffee table is out of reach from where you actually sit, the arm of the sofa is rounded and upholstered, and so the mug ends up balanced on a cushion, wedged between your thigh and the armrest, or on the floor where someone will find it with their foot. You have already cleaned coffee out of that cushion once.

Saddle™ gives that arm a flat top. Two slim bamboo legs are hinged underneath on metal pivots; they swing down and inward so their own weight and the tray's clamp the whole thing onto the armrest and hold it level. Nothing screws in, nothing clips on, nothing marks the fabric — it saddles the arm the way a bike seat sits on a post, and it lifts off in one movement when you want the arm back.

The tray face is 25 cm across with a raised lip running all the way round, which is the part that matters: a flat board on a sofa arm just slides things off onto the floor, and the lip stops a mug walking when someone sits down heavily beside you. There is room on it for a mug, a phone, the remote and a paperback at the same time. Because it is solid bamboo rather than veneered board, the rim can be a single continuous curve with no seam to lift, and it takes a wipe without swelling.

It fits most standard upholstered sofa and armchair arms, roughly 10–20 cm wide, flat-topped or gently rounded. When it is not in use the legs fold up against the underside and it lies flat — in a drawer, behind the sofa, or on the coffee table doing duty as a small serving tray.

Care

Wipe it with a damp cloth and dry it straight away. Never soak it, never put it in a dishwasher and don't leave standing liquid sitting in the tray overnight — bamboo is laminated in strips, and prolonged wet is the one thing that will lift a glue line. Mop up spills when they happen rather than later. If the surface starts to look dry or pale after a year, a thin coat of food-safe mineral oil rubbed in with a cloth and buffed off brings the colour back. Don't put a hot pan or an uninsulated cafetière straight onto it, and check the pivot rivets occasionally: if a leg starts to feel loose, a gentle squeeze with pliers on the rivet head takes the play out.

Materials

Solid laminated bamboo throughout, sanded and clear-sealed, with two hinged bamboo clamp legs on steel pivot rivets. Verified size taken from the manufacturer's own dimension drawing: the tray is 9.84 in / 25 cm across the face, with a raised rim lip roughly 1.5 cm high and an overall span of about 10 in / 25.5 cm with the legs folded down. It weighs around 420 g. No plastic, no veneer and no adhesive-backed pads — the grip comes from the geometry of the legs rather than from a rubber surface that would eventually mark upholstery.

Saddle™ clamped over the arm of a linen sofa holding a stoneware mug and a book

The side table you don't have room for

In a small living room there is often nowhere to put a side table — the sofa is already against the wall and the walkway is the walkway. This takes up no floor at all. Mug, book, phone, all within reach of where you actually sit.

A hand setting a mug down onto the Saddle™ tray on a sofa arm

On in two seconds, off in one

Swing the legs down, drop it over the arm, done — no tools, no screws, nothing that marks the fabric. Lift it straight off when someone needs the armrest back, or fold the legs flat and slide it away entirely.

Saddle™ detail — solid bamboo, raised rim lip and folding clamp legs

Solid bamboo, one piece

Laminated bamboo rather than veneered chipboard, which is why the rim can run as one unbroken curve with no edge banding waiting to peel. Steel pivots in the legs, a clear seal on the grain, and nothing plastic anywhere on it.

Solved an argument about the coffee table

Our lounge is too narrow for a side table and I kept putting my tea on the floor, which ended how you'd expect. This sits on the arm and holds a mug, my phone and the remote without any wobble. Arm of our sofa is about 15 cm and it's a snug fit. The lip is the bit that actually matters — my husband drops onto the sofa like a felled tree and nothing has gone over yet.

Measure your armrest first

Works perfectly on our two-seater but it is too small for the wide squared-off arm on the corner unit in the other room, so it's worth getting a tape measure out before ordering. On a normal arm it's rock solid — the legs are shaped so the weight pulls them in rather than splaying them. Bamboo is nicer in the hand than I expected at this price, properly sanded, no rough edges.

Also good as a plain tray

Bought it for the sofa but I've ended up folding the legs and using it as a little serving tray for two coffees as well, which I wasn't expecting. One thing: don't leave a wet glass sweating on it for hours, I did that and there was a faint ring for a day or two before it faded. Wipe it and it's fine.

Frequently asked questions

Will it fit my sofa?
It suits upholstered arms roughly 10–20 cm wide, whether flat-topped or gently rounded, which covers most standard two- and three-seaters and armchairs. Take a tape measure across the top of your armrest before ordering. Where it doesn't work is on very wide squared-off arms on large corner units, on hard wooden or metal arms with no give, and on arms that slope steeply — the legs need a reasonably level top to sit square on.
Does it actually stay put, or does it slide?
It stays put, and the reason is the shape of the legs rather than any grip pad. They hinge down and inward, so the weight of the tray and whatever is on it pulls them tighter against the sides of the armrest — loading it up makes it more stable, not less. On a snug arm it doesn't shift at all. If your arm is at the wider end of the range it can rock very slightly when empty, and a mug settles that immediately.
How much can I actually put on it?
Comfortably a full mug, a phone, a remote and a paperback at once — that is what the 25 cm face is sized for. It will take a couple of kilos without complaint. What it isn't is a dinner table: a full plate with cutlery plus a glass is more than the footprint really wants, and a laptop is too wide and too heavy to be safe on a sofa arm.
Will it damage or mark the upholstery?
It shouldn't. The legs are sanded bamboo with rounded edges and no adhesive pads, no rubber feet and no screws — which is deliberate, because stick-on grip pads are the things that eventually leave a shiny patch or transfer onto pale fabric. On velvet or a heavy pile you may see the pile pressed down where the legs sat; that brushes out. If your sofa is very pale, lift it off now and then rather than leaving it in the same spot for months.
Can it get wet? Is it dishwasher safe?
A damp cloth is fine; a dishwasher is not, and neither is soaking it. Bamboo is laminated from strips and prolonged wet is the one thing that can lift a glue line over time. Wipe spills when they happen rather than leaving them, and don't let a cold glass sweat on it all evening — that can leave a faint ring, which usually fades within a day. A thin coat of food-safe mineral oil once a year keeps the colour.
Does it fold away, and is any assembly needed?
No assembly at all — it arrives as one piece with the legs already hinged, so it goes straight onto the arm out of the box. When you don't want it there, the legs fold up flat against the underside and it lies flat enough to slide into a drawer, behind the sofa or into a suitcase. Plenty of people leave the legs folded and use it as a small round serving tray, which it does perfectly well.

Super Handy and Space-Saving Lap Desk. This foldable lap desk has been a really useful addition to my routine. I use it mostly for studying, writing, and using my laptop, and it’s made working from bed or the couch way more comfortable. What I Liked: \- Folds up easily for storage when not in use — perfect if you have limited space \- The surface is sturdy and spacious enough for a laptop, notebook, and even a drink \- A tad heavy but stable, so it doesn’t wobble or feel flimsy \- Great for schoolwork, casual reading, or even eating meals in bed \- Looks just like the picture (don't mind the dim lighting in the picture, it's night time which is why it's dim) Small Notes: \- If you're using a larger laptop or lots of accessories, the space might feel a bit tight \- The height isn't adjustable, but it's comfortable for most setups ) !Super Handy and Space-Saving Lap Desk ! !Super Handy and Space-Saving Lap Desk ! ! ! ella *5 out of 5 stars* ##### Super Handy and Space-Saving Lap Desk This foldable lap desk has been a really useful addition to my routine. Well.... I bought this to use as a laptop desk for my chair. All I have to say is double check your measurements. I wasn't too worried, I knew I could use it somewhere else. I unfolded the legs and extended them. Pretty sturdy construction, but not meant to bear much weight. I wanted to see how to change the height. The leg pulled out with a jerk and wouldn't go back in. No matter how hard I pressed down on the button, it would not budge. The cover of the sliding latch came off. I got frustrated and my husband decided to mess with it. He got frustrated. So I decided, alright the table does not get to win and I got a screw driver. Since the cover of the plastic switch was already off, I could see the edge of the mechanism. I gently pried it out and got the leg off. I got a look at the switch and then, looked at the others, it had been upside down. I laughed so hard. My husband was annoyed, but seriously, how many times have you been doing a repetitive task and something ends upside down. It works now. Not what it was intended for, but it'll work as a nice raised platform for the cats' water fountain. )

Five Star Table. Color: Black I dont write too many reviews, but this one deserves 5 stars. Great quality, very sturdy and the perfect size for my toddler grandchildren to use as a "coffee table" or craft table in front of their toddler sized chairs. I know its not the intent of this table, but it works perfectly for us! I really love this little table! )

Sturdy, affordable little table!. Color: Bamboo For what it is, it's a great little table. It is full assembled, I only needed to pull it out of the packaging and fold down the legs and it was ready to go. It was packaged well. I am using this to put my kitties feeder and waterer on. Be aware that this CANNOT get wet at all. I would even be careful spraying it with cleaner. It is made of composite wood with plastic veneer. If the edge of the table gets wet, the strip around the edges begins to pop off. I solved the problem by putting my kitties waterer on a tray. Just keep this in mind when you are considering this table for your purposes. It's perfect for my needs. It's the right size, and it's plenty sturdy enough to hold what I need it to. I imagine it would be a good little floor table or desk. It's not too small or short for that. )

Great Table. Color: White Oak This is actually a really good folding table. I used it in my college dorm last year for everything. I often served food and ate together on the floor with my roomates LOL. Now I use it when I’m working late in bed. The folding legs makes it easy to tuck it into a corner once done using too. It’s actually pretty sturdy and material is good. I would recommend!! )
