Is it solid brass or plated?
Cast brass through and through — not plated steel, not resin with a brass coat. You can see it on the underside, which is left as raw cast metal. No lacquer either, so the surface keeps changing with handling.
Does it stand on its own?
Yes. It stands on its own six cast legs with the body lifted a few millimetres clear of the surface — no base, plinth or pin. It sits equally well on a windowsill, a bookshelf, a desk or the edge of a tea tray.
Will the finish change over time?
Yes, and that is intended. The brass is unlacquered, so the bright high points warm and slowly darken where your fingers rest while the green-bronze stays down in the wing veins. Most owners let it happen; brass polish on the raised bands brings the shine back if you would rather keep it bright.
