A rearing horse in cast resin, 30.5 cm tall. The tail sweeps to the ground and carries the weight, which is what lets it stand on two hind legs with no rod and no plinth. Three finishes.

Overview

A rearing horse is the hardest thing to put on a shelf — the whole animal balanced on two hind legs, which is why most versions cheat with a steel rod up the belly or an oversized plinth.

Prance earns the pose instead. Muscle and tendon run through the chest and haunch, the mane falls in separate strands, the tail fans as it drops. Motion held still.

Care

Dust with a soft dry brush rather than a cloth — it slips between the mane strands and the raised forelegs. Keep it out of long direct sun, and skip polish and solvents: the finish sits on the surface of the resin.

Materials

Cast resin with a painted matte finish — not solid bronze, brass or stone. Three finishes off the same mould, each with a matching base.

  • Size: 30.5 cm tall, 17 cm long, 8 cm deep, 550 g
  • Detail: Modelled muscle and tendon, mane cut as separate strands, long tail falling to the ground as a third support
  • Base: Flat oval, sits level
  • Finishes: Antique Gold (warm matte gold, mottled dark-bronze base), Chalk White (soft matte white), Charcoal (deep matte black)

Console-worthy scale

Big enough to hold a shelf

Enough presence to carry a console, a mantel or a wide desk corner on its own, with no cluster of smaller objects needed around it. Give it a clear, level spot.

The three finishes side by side: antique gold, chalk white and charcoal

Pick a finish

Three finishes, one shape

One mould, three finishes. Antique Gold is warm and matte over a mottled bronze rock base; Chalk White reads like plaster; Charcoal holds the strongest silhouette against light paint. Same shape, same price — pick on the wall behind it.

The engineering

Why it stands up

The tail falls in one thick mass to the ground behind the hooves and acts as a third leg — no rod, no plinth, no wire. Weight is kept low in the base and hind legs, so it sits down solid.

It stands without a rod

Every rearing horse I looked at either had a visible metal rod or sat on a plinth the size of a coaster. This one balances on the two back legs and the tail, and once you see it you cannot unsee how neatly it is done. Solid on my oak console, no lean, no wobble when the drawer below shuts. Went for the charcoal against a pale wall and the outline reads beautifully.

It needs its own space and earns it

It needs its own space and it earns it. The mane is properly cut into strands rather than one smooth lump, which is what makes it look like a sculpture rather than a gift-shop thing. Sits down solid on the console with no lean.

Gold is warmer than it looks online

I hesitated over the gold expecting something brash and it is not — matte, quite antique, with darker shading down in the muscle so it does not glare under a lamp. Against a walnut console it looks properly expensive.

Frequently asked questions

Is it bronze or resin?
Cast resin with a painted matte finish, not solid bronze, brass or stone. At 550 g it sits down properly on a shelf. What you are getting is the modelling and the free-standing pose.
Does it really stand on its own?
Yes, with no rod, wire or wall support. The long tail falls to the ground behind the hooves and acts as a third contact point alongside the two hind legs, and the weight sits low so the centre of gravity is under the belly. The flat oval underside sits level.
How much space does it need?
30.5 cm tall, 17 cm long and 8 cm deep — a console, mantel, credenza or wide desk-corner piece, designed to be read from a couple of metres away.
Which finish should I choose?
All three are the same mould, size and price, so choose on the wall behind it. Antique Gold is a warm matte gold with darker shading in the muscle over a mottled bronze base — the richest of the three, strongest against dark walls and wood. Chalk White reads quiet and sculptural, and looks best where there is some contrast behind it. Charcoal keeps the strongest silhouette against light paint and shows dust the least.
