Ruby™ is the one thing in the room that isn't beige. A wide, low shade of deep translucent ruby glass — more river pebble than mushroom cap — sits in a mirror-polished chrome cup on three splayed chrome legs, unmistakably 1960s. Off, it's a piece of coloured glass. On, it fills the corner with warm amber-red light.

Overview

A calm room is all oatmeal, oak and cream — which is exactly why one strong colour lands so hard. A single piece of red glass on a sideboard does more work than a shelf of neutral ceramics.

Ruby is that piece, and the red lives in the glass rather than the bulb — there by day as a deep glossy object, and there again after dark as a low amber-red wash on the wall.

Care

Dust the glass with a soft dry cloth. If you use glass cleaner, put it on the cloth — never spray it at the lamp. Mirror chrome shows fingerprints, so buff the cup and the three legs with a dry microfibre now and then. Unplug and let the bulb cool before you clean, and keep the base dry.

Materials

A thick, glossy, translucent ruby-red glass shade — flattened and wide rather than domed — seated into a mirror-polished chrome cup and carried on three splayed polished-chrome rods.

  • Light: Warm-white bulb fitting behind the glass — 2700K LED gives the deepest red
  • Power: Mains-corded, inline switch on the cable
  • Size: 27 cm tall, 20 cm shade, ~900 g

Ruby™ Glass Mushroom Lamp lit on a travertine console beside a terracotta vessel and stacked books in a modern minimalist room

Lit or not, it works

Colour you can switch on

Put it where you want the eye to stop — a console, a bar cart, the end of a bookshelf, a bedside table with nothing else going on.

On its tripod

Lifted on three chrome rods

The tripod is not decoration. Three slender polished-chrome legs hold the shade clear of the surface, so light escapes underneath as well as through the glass — and the whole lamp looks lighter than it weighs.

The look

Wide, low, unmistakably retro

Most small glass lamps are tall domes. This one is a flattened pebble, wide and low on its chrome frame. From the doorway it reads as 1960s; up close it reads as a piece of glass someone shaped on purpose.

The only colour in my flat, and that is the point

Everything I own is cream, oak or linen. This went on the console by the front door and now the hallway has somewhere for your eye to land. Half my visitors touch it before they say hello.

The chrome legs are what sold me

I nearly bought another opal dome lamp. Then I saw the tripod. Three thin polished rods, and it looks like something out of a 1968 catalogue — plus light gets out underneath the glass, not only through it.

Deep glossy red off, amber on

The shade really is 20 cm across, so it fills the end of my sideboard instead of perching on it. Off, it's a lump of dark cherry glass. On with a 2700K bulb, the whole corner goes soft orange-red. Both looks are good.

Frequently asked questions

Does it actually give out red light?
Warm amber-red, not disco red. The light travels through thick ruby glass on its way out, so what reaches the wall is a low, warm wash with a red cast. Think mood and accent light rather than task light.
Will red clash with the rest of my room?
Not if everything else stays neutral — that's exactly the point. Ruby is designed to be the one saturated note in an otherwise oatmeal-and-oak room, so it reads as considered rather than random. Full dimensions are in the product info above if you'd like to check it against your space first.
Is it corded or rechargeable?
Corded, with an inline switch on the cable, so it stays put and stays at full brightness all evening. If you want a small lamp you can carry from room to room, our Porcini™ and Truffle™ are the cordless ones.
What bulb should I put in it?
A small warm-white screw-in bulb — go for 2700K LED. The warmer the bulb, the deeper and richer the red reads through the glass. Cool white flattens the colour towards pink, so avoid it.
Red only? Is there a neutral version?
Red only. Ruby™ exists to be the accent object in a quiet room, so we did not dilute it with a beige twin. If you want the same small-lamp footprint in a soft colour, look at Morel™ in opal glass or Pillar™ in cream.
Is the glass fragile?
It is thick blown glass with a rolled lip, not a thin bauble, and it seats down into the chrome cup rather than balancing on top of it. Treat it like a good drinking glass: fine in normal daily use, but don't knock it off a shelf.
