Overview

A calm room is all oatmeal, oak and cream, which is exactly why one strong colour has such an effect. A single piece of red glass on a sideboard does more than a shelf of neutral ceramics.

Garnet is that piece, and the red is in the glass and not the bulb: by day a deep, glossy object, and after dark a low amber-red wash on the wall.

Care

Dust the glass with a soft, dry cloth. If you use glass cleaner, apply it to the cloth and never spray it at the lamp. Mirror chrome shows fingerprints, so buff the cup and the three legs with a dry microfibre cloth from time to time. Unplug the lamp and let the bulb cool before cleaning, and keep the base dry.

The tripod is not there for decoration. Three slim legs in polished chrome hold the shade clear of the surface, so light escapes beneath as well as through the glass, and the whole lamp looks lighter than it is.

Is the light it gives really red?

A warm amber-red, not a disco red. The light passes through thick ruby glass on the way out, so the wall gets a low, warm wash with a red cast. Think of it as mood and accent light, not task light.

Will red clash with the rest of the room?

Not if everything else is neutral, and that is the idea. Garnet is meant to be the one saturated note in a room of oatmeal and oak, so it looks considered and not random. The full dimensions are in the product info above if you want to check them against your space first.

Does it run from a cord or a rechargeable battery?

Corded, with an inline switch on the cable, so it stays in place at full brightness all evening. If you want a small lamp to carry from room to room, look at our cordless lamps.

Which bulb should I fit?

A small warm-white screw-in bulb; choose a 2700K LED. The warmer the bulb, the deeper and richer the red looks through the glass. Cool white pushes the colour towards pink, so avoid it.

Is it red only, or is there a neutral version?

How fragile is the glass?

It is thick blown glass with a rolled lip, not a thin bauble, and it sits down into the chrome cup instead of balancing on top. Treat it as you would a good drinking glass: fine in normal daily use, but do not knock it off a shelf.
