Kitchen counters and dining tables deserve light that lands where you are working, not in your eyes. This chalk white pendant light, a 26 cm enamelled steel barn dome on an aged brass holder, is deep enough to bury the bulb above your eye-line and throw a warm pool of light straight down.

The clean white enamel keeps the look quiet, while the aged brass holder adds a little warmth to the whole arrangement.

  • 26 cm enamelled steel shade
  • Bulb hidden above eye-line
  • Warm light directed straight down
  • Aged brass holder

Overview

The problem with most pendants is a shade too shallow to do its job. Sit at the counter, look up, and there is the filament: a hard, bright point in your eyeline that flattens the food beneath it and leaves you squinting through dinner.

Cypress™ is a 26 cm barn dome in enamelled steel, 20 cm deep, with the socket set high inside. The bulb sits well back under the rolled rim, so from any normal standing or seated height you see the light and not its source. The warm-white enamel lining reflects almost all of it straight down, giving a bright circle on the worktop and no glare across the room.

Hung 70–75 cm above a counter or table it lights a working surface properly, enough to chop and read by, while the rest of the room stays soft and low. The braided cord is 100 cm long and shortens at the canopy, so it suits a low ceiling or a high one.

Care

Switch off at the wall and let the bulb cool before touching the shade. Enamel wipes clean with a soft, damp cloth and dries to a shine. Use no cream cleaner, scouring pad or anything abrasive, which would dull the glaze. Buff the brass with a dry cloth only and leave the natural patina, which deepens with age. Have it installed by a qualified electrician.

Materials

Shade in vitreous enamelled steel, a fired glass coat over pressed steel, with a rolled outer lip and a warm-white enamel lining. Size: shade 26 cm diameter × 20 cm tall; canopy 10 cm diameter × 2 cm deep; cord 100 cm, which can be shortened at the canopy. Light source: 1 × E27 socket. A deep shade and no bare bulb

Made for a work surface

Hung 70–75 cm above a counter or table, the 26 cm dome puts a warm circle of working light exactly where you chop, read and eat. Hang two or three along an island, or a single one over a small table.

You see the light and not the filament

Stand at the counter and look up: the rolled rim hides the bulb completely. The light that reaches you has been reflected off white enamel first, so it falls softly on your hands and the chopping board and leaves no bright dot in your vision.

Enamel fired on, not paint on tin

The glaze is fired onto pressed steel, so up close it has real depth and a faint orange-peel texture under the fingers. Cooking splashes wipe off, and it will not yellow above a hob as painted metal does.

No more squinting at the island

We had two bare-filament pendants over the island and I had stopped sitting at the end nearest the window because the bulb hit me straight in the face. Put two chalk white ones up at about 72 cm and the counter is brighter than it was before, but you never actually see the bulb.

Smaller than I expected, in a good way

Our kitchen ceiling is only 2.3 m so I was worried it would hang in the way. Took maybe ten minutes to coil the spare cord inside the canopy, no tools beyond a screwdriver. The charcoal reads almost black in daylight and much softer once it is lit.

The switch on the lamp is the best bit

Small thing, but the brass toggle means I can turn just this one on when I am washing up late instead of lighting the whole kitchen from the wall. The enamel has a proper weight to it as well, no tinny rattle when the back door shuts.

Frequently asked questions

How high should it hang?
70–75 cm from the worktop or tabletop to the bottom rim. At that height the bulb is hidden from both a standing and a seated eyeline, and the pool of light still covers a full place setting. The 100 cm cord can be shortened at the canopy if your ceiling is low.
Is a bulb supplied?
Yes. The Warm LED Included option comes with a 7 W 2700K warm-white LED, which is the tone in our photographs. A clear filament bulb also looks good against the white lining.
How big is it in practice?
The shade is 26 cm across and 20 cm tall, roughly as wide as a dinner plate and a little deeper than a cereal bowl. It is smaller than most people imagine from a photograph, which is why two or three in a row over an island look better than one alone.
Can I install it myself?
It is a hardwired ceiling fitting and not a plug-in lamp. It mounts at a standard ceiling rose and the 10 cm canopy covers the fixing, but the wiring should be done by a qualified electrician, usually in well under an hour.
Will the enamel chip or go yellow?
Vitreous enamel is glass fired onto steel, so it is much harder than paint and will not yellow or scorch above a hob. Like any enamel it can chip if struck sharply, so hang it clear of the swing of a cupboard door. Everyday cleaning does not mark it.
Which colour suits which room?
Chalk White gives the most light and almost vanishes against a cream or limewash ceiling. Charcoal looks nearly black in daylight and gives a pale kitchen one clear dark point. Stone Grey falls between the two and is the easiest of the three to place with oak and warm plaster.
