The hardest thing to buy for a living room is a lamp with any character — the shops are full of white ceramic cylinders and matte black cones, safe and forgettable, in every second rental in the country.

Chalice puts the character in the glass: a squat, wide-shouldered urn in creamy white scattered with dense chocolate-and-black tortoiseshell, soft optic ribbing running down the sides. Blown by mouth, so no two bases are ever alike.

Care

Wipe the glass with a barely damp cloth, then buff dry — the pattern is sealed inside and can't rub off. Keep ammonia-based cleaners off the brass; a dry cloth is enough. Brush the burlap along the weave rather than wetting it, and lift the lamp by the base, not the shade.

Does it come with a bulb?
No — it takes one standard E26 bulb up to 40 W, so you choose exactly the mood. We used a warm 2700K LED filament at around 400 lumens for our photos, which lights the burlap a proper amber and brings out the brown tones in the glass. Pair it with a plug-in dimmer on the cord if you'd like it lower.
Is this a bedside lamp, or something bigger?
Bigger — think console table, sideboard or the end of a desk rather than a nightstand. It has real presence, closer to a small piece of furniture than an accent light. Full dimensions are in the product info above if you'd like to measure your space first.
Will my base look exactly like the photos?
Close, but not identical, and that is the point. The dark spots are chips of coloured glass picked up on a hot gather and then stretched as the bubble is blown, so their size, density and placement change with every piece. Expect the same palette — chocolate brown, near-black and warm amber over creamy white — but expect your own arrangement of it. If you want two matching lamps for either side of a bed, order two and accept that they will be a pair rather than twins.
How is it switched on?
A small rocker switch moulded into the clear cord, sitting on the tabletop about a hand's length from the base. One press on, one press off — no app, no remote, no touch sensor to second-guess in the dark.
Can I dim the light?
Yes — pair it with any plug-in lamp dimmer on the cord, or fit a dimmable warm LED filament bulb. Either works well; a dimmable bulb gives the smoothest range.
Is the shade real burlap, and how do I clean it?
Real unlined jute burlap, which is why you can see daylight through the weave and why the odd fibre stands proud of the seam. Keep it dry: brush it along the weave with a soft clothes brush, or vacuum it on low suction through a piece of stocking so the nozzle cannot pull threads out. Never sponge it or spray fabric cleaner on it — jute water-marks and the marks do not come out. Snip a stray thread with scissors rather than tugging it.
