A roman numeral wall clock that reads as shape as much as time. This 40 cm open-frame iron clock joins two concentric rings with four spokes, and the band between them is left open so your wall shows through — presence without the weight of a solid dial.

  • Raised 3D Roman numerals that catch the light
  • Open-frame design lets the wall read through
  • Silent quartz movement, one AA battery
  • Hangs from a single nail
  • Matte Black or Antique Gold finishes

Set it on an empty wall and let it mark the hours without ever ticking at you.

Overview

A big wall is the hardest thing in a room to get right: too small a piece looks like an accident, and too solid a piece turns the wall into a slab. Serene is properly large at 40 cm but has an open frame, so it takes the space without closing it off.

Two finishes: Matte Black looks like drawn lines on a pale wall, and Antique Gold, an aged brass with a dark wash in the recesses, warms a deeper one.

Care

Dust it with a soft, dry brush or a microfibre cloth. The open frame gathers much less dust than a clock with a glass front, but after a few weeks the top edges of the raised numerals show a fine line of it. Do not spray anything at the clock, because liquid runs down the spokes and collects against the movement housing behind the hub. Never use solvents, abrasive cream or a melamine sponge on the Antique Gold: the dark wash in the recesses gives that finish its depth, and it lifts off easily. If the clock runs slow, the battery is nearly always the cause, so change the AA before assuming anything worse, and take the cell out if the clock is to be stored for more than a few months.

Materials

Powder-coated wrought iron throughout, in the two rings, the four spokes, the twelve raised Roman numerals and the central hub disc, with slim tapered metal hands. Matte Black is a baked satin black. Antique Gold is an aged-brass finish with a dark bronze wash left in the recesses, so no two pieces catch the light in quite the same way. One verified size: 40 cm / 16 in across the outer ring, about 3 cm deep off the wall, 887 g shipped. There is no glass lens and no backing plate; the open frame is the design. A keyhole bracket is fixed to the back of the top spoke. It runs on one AA battery, not included.

The wall remains part of the room

The band between the rings is open, so your plaster, paint or brick shows through the clock, and each raised Roman numeral casts a small shadow, so you can read the hour at a glance from four metres.

Hangs on one nail

A keyhole bracket is fixed to the back of the top spoke, and the whole frame ships at 887 g. Hang it on one nail or a 1 kg adhesive hook, nudge it level, fit the AA battery and set the time with the wheel behind the hub. No bracket is needed, and no wall plug on plaster.

Forum wall clock detail callouts: raised 3D numerals, 40 cm across, open iron frame

Iron, not plastic

Powder-coated wrought iron throughout: rings, spokes, raised numerals and hub disc. There is nothing to fog in a kitchen and no acrylic to yellow on a sunny wall, and a silent quartz movement behind the centre disc runs on one AA battery.

Solved a wall I had stared at for a year

It went above a 1.5 m sideboard in the hall. I was worried 40 cm would look mean on that much wall and it does not — because you see the plaster through it, it reads bigger than it measures. Got the Antique Gold and the dark wash in the numerals genuinely looks aged rather than sprayed on.

The shadows are the best bit

Black one, hung where the afternoon sun comes across the wall, and every numeral throws a line onto the plaster behind it. Looks like two clocks. Weighs almost nothing so one nail is doing the whole job. Fair warning: no battery in the box, and no instructions worth reading, but there is nothing to instruct — AA in the back, turn the wheel, done.

Quiet enough for a bedroom, but measure first

We put it in the spare room and I sat and listened for it deliberately. Ear against the hub you can just hear the motor; from the bed there is nothing at all. Do measure though — 40 cm is bigger in your hands than it looks in a photo, and it dwarfed the shelf I had originally planned it for.

Frequently asked questions

How big is 40 cm in practice?
It is 40 cm / just under 16 in across the outer ring, which is a large clock, about the span of two open hands. Above a 150 cm sideboard it sits comfortably as the only feature on the wall; above a narrow 60 cm shelf it overwhelms the shelf. Cut a 40 cm circle from newspaper and tape it up for ten minutes before you drill. It takes two minutes and is the only reliable way to know.
Does it come in one size only?
Yes. This frame is made in 40 cm / 16 in only. There is no smaller or larger version, and we prefer to say so than to list sizes that do not exist. The choice you do have is the finish: Matte Black or Antique Gold.
Does it tick?
There is no tick you can hear. The movement is silent quartz, so from a metre away the room stays quiet, and the clock suits a bedroom or a nursery. Put your ear to the central hub and you will hear a faint whirr from the motor, as with every silent movement.
Is the face covered by glass?
No, on purpose. There is no dial and no lens: the band between the two iron rings is open so that your wall shows through. That lets a 40 cm clock hang on a wall without looking heavy, and it means nothing can fog in a kitchen or yellow in sunlight. The price is that you dust the numerals instead of wiping a pane.
How is it hung? Will one nail hold it?
A keyhole bracket is fixed to the back of the top spoke, so it hangs directly on one nail, a screw or a good adhesive hook. The whole clock ships at 887 g, so a hook rated for 1 kg is plenty on plaster and no wall plug is needed. Wrought iron is rigid, so once it sits on the nail it hangs level unaided.
Which finish should I choose?
Matte Black for a pale wall, such as cream, limewash, white or pale plaster, where you want the clock to look like lines drawn on the wall. Antique Gold for anything warmer or darker: clay, olive, walnut panelling or deep charcoal. The gold is an aged brass with a dark bronze wash left in the recesses, not a bright, shiny gold, so it sits quietly beside walnut and terracotta.
