You get a kinetic sculpture that comes alive with one fingertip. Gold rings turn inside each other on two axes at once, tracing slow, shifting circles that catch the light from every angle.

At 22.5 cm tall, this armillary-style piece earns its place on a desk or shelf, and because nothing needs to be plugged in or charged, it is always ready to move when you are.

  • Gold armillary-style rings in a desk-friendly silhouette
  • 22.5 cm tall — present without taking over the surface
  • Two axes of motion from a single gentle touch
  • No power, no batteries, no charging

Give this kinetic sculpture a nudge on your way past and let it keep your desk in gentle motion.

Overview

Everything else on a desk wants something from you: a charge, a notification, an update.

This one needs only a push. Put one fingertip on the outer hoop and the rings run, turning on two axes at once so that the pattern never repeats. It slows and stops, and you push it again.

Care

A soft, dry microfibre cloth restores the shine when the plating picks up fingerprints, and a soft brush lifts dust from the nest of rings. Start it with a push on the outer hoop, lift it by the plinth, and do not use polish or solvents, because the gold is plating and not solid metal.

Materials

Gold-plated metal in all the rings, arms, posts, balls and the plinth, with small pale-green glass beads on the inner arms. There is no plastic in the moving parts and no power source of any kind.

  • Size: 22.5 cm tall, 22.9 cm wide, 7 cm deep, ~600 g
  • Construction: the outer hoop pivots between two posts, and a second axle inside carries the nest of rings
  • Weighting: balls at the crown and foot of the hoop and beads at the ends of the arms, which keep the spin going
  • Power: none. Started by hand, with no battery, switch or cable

Something to look up for

Something for your hands

Push the outer hoop with one fingertip and it runs, with no cable, batteries, light or sound. It is what you reach for on a long call, and it stops when it stops.

Set it going

It spins on two axes

The hoop pivots between the posts, and inside it the nest of inner rings turns on a second axle at right angles, so one push rotates the whole on two axes at once and the pattern never repeats. The weight is at the extremes, which keeps the spin going.

No power needed

No plug needed

No battery, switch, cable or motor: it is started by hand, and that is its appeal. Give the hoop clear space to swing and it runs whenever you touch it.

Better than the phone during long calls

Bought it as a fidget object for my desk and it has completely replaced picking up my phone on calls. One flick and it runs for a decent while, and because it turns on two axes at once the pattern is different every time so your eye keeps following it. Heavy enough that it never moves on the desk.

The gold is warmer in person

The gold is warmer in person than in the photos, more brass than yellow, which suits my setup. Once it had clear space beside the monitor it was perfect — the hoop swings wide as it turns. Runs for ages off a single push.

Spins smoothly, no grinding at all

No batteries and nothing to plug in, which is exactly what I wanted — I have enough things on this desk that need charging. Spins smoothly with no grinding from the pivots, and the plinth is heavy enough that it stays put.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it spin?
A good while from one push. The mass is placed at the extremes on purpose, with heavy balls at the crown and foot of the hoop and weighted beads at the ends of the inner arms, and that carries the spin much longer than the size suggests. It runs on its bearings until friction stops it, and then you push it again.
Are batteries or a plug needed?
Neither. It has no battery compartment, switch, cable or motor and is a wholly mechanical object started with a fingertip. That is most of its appeal: nothing to charge, nothing to pair and no electronics to fail.
How much desk space does it take?
22.5 cm tall and 22.9 cm wide, on a plinth 7 cm deep. The hoop swings as it turns, so keep it clear of a monitor arm or a lamp. The plinth is wider than the hoop, so it stays within its footprint and does not creep over the desk.
Is it noisy?
Hardly at all. There is no motor, clockwork or chime, only a faint whisper from the pivots as the rings turn, quieter than a desk fan and inaudible on a call. It gives no light either, so it suits a shared office or a desk on camera.
