Most homes have a wall that never gets solved — too narrow for a picture, too shallow for a shelf. Somewhere a little greenery would be lovely, and there is nowhere on earth to stand a pot.

Indigo is a vase with its back cut flat: from the front a complete blue-and-white vessel, from the side only half of one, hung tight to the plaster on a single hook. Which is precisely why it works where nothing else fits.

Care

Rinse by hand in warm water with a drop of washing-up liquid — the glaze is non-porous, so nothing stains it. Change the water every few days as you would in any vase; a bottle brush or a little white vinegar keeps the waterline clear.

Not a dry pocket for a fake stem. The porcelain is glazed and sealed through, so you fill it from the tap, drop in three cut stems or a couple of lucky bamboo stalks, and top the level up when it falls. Dried and faux stems work just as well.

Solved the strip beside my front door

The painting is better than the price suggests

Close up the cobalt is rich and deep, with real weight to the lotus scroll rather than looking printed on. There is a very fine crackle over the white glaze that makes it read older than it is. Mine has held water for six weeks with no seeping at all.

Does it hold water?
