Light should follow you, not the other way around. This cordless touch lamp runs on battery power alone, so you can set it on a windowsill, a shelf, or the floor beside your chair, wherever an outlet never reaches.

You control it with a touch: a tap on the disc switches it on, another tap glides through warm light, then neutral, then cool, and keeping your finger down softens the glow.

  • One charge lasts as long as 48 hours
  • Brushed-nickel body that stays compact
  • No cable and no wall socket required

It turns any corner of your home into somewhere you can settle down and read.

Overview

Most bedside lamps ask something of you at the worst moment. You are half asleep in a black room, feeling along a cord for a switch the size of a pea, or you give up and turn on the overhead light, which wakes the whole room and costs you twenty minutes getting back to sleep.

Sterling™ has no cord and no switch to find. The top disc is the control: press the raised button once and it wakes at a low, warm glow, press again to move through warm, neutral and cool white, and hold your finger down to slide the brightness smoothly up or down with no fixed steps to overshoot. The LEDs are in a band under the disc and the metal covers them, so lying down you see a ring of light and never the source.

An 1800 mAh cell in the base runs it for up to 48 hours on a low setting and recharges in about three hours, so no cable runs down the back of the nightstand and nobody argues over which side of the bed is nearer the socket. The base is solid machined metal, heavy for its size, so it stays where you put it: on the nightstand, the edge of the bath or the balcony table, or in your hand on the way down the hall at 2am.

Care

Wipe the metal with a soft cloth, dry or barely damp. Brushed nickel shows fingerprints, and a dry buff along the grain removes them at once. Use nothing abrasive, no cream cleaner and no solvent. Clean the opal band with a soft, dry cloth only. Never rinse the lamp under a tap or leave it out in the rain, because there is a battery in the base. If you store it for months, charge it to about half first and top it up two or three times a year; do not store it flat.

Materials

Body in aluminium alloy with a brushed nickel finish: a machined disc head, a tapered stem and a weighted, stepped base. Light band in opal acrylic over integrated LEDs, with three colour temperatures (warm, neutral and cool white) and stepless dimming, all controlled from the touch button on the top disc. Built-in 1800 mAh rechargeable cell: about three hours to charge and up to 48 hours of light on a low setting. Charging port and a physical on/off switch under the base; USB charging cable included, and no mains adapter is needed. Shipped in a box of 22 × 16 × 14 cm, 407 g.

Light where no socket exists

Nothing runs down the back of the nightstand, and it does not have to be near a plug. Put it on whichever side of the bed needs it, then carry it to the bath, the balcony or the kitchen when you want it there.

A hand tapping the disc top of the Stem lamp to dim it

Tap it; there is nothing to hunt for

In the dark you reach for the top of the lamp and not for a switch on a wire. One press wakes it on low, and a finger held down slides the brightness to almost nothing, so you can find a glass of water without waking fully.

Stem lamp with labels: tap to dim, three light tones, up to 48 hours per charge

You see the glow and not the LED

The light comes from an opal band set under the solid metal disc, so from the pillow you see a soft ring of warmth and not a bright dot. With three tones you can keep it amber at night and switch to white for reading or work.

Finally something on that side of the bed

My side of the bed has no socket anywhere near it, so for two years I read by the overhead and then walked back across the room in the dark. This just sits there. I charge it maybe once a fortnight and I honestly forget it needs charging at all.

The dimming goes properly low

I was expecting three brightness steps and one of them to be too bright, which is what every other touch lamp I have owned does. You hold your finger down and it slides. At the very bottom of the warm setting it is barely more than a nightlight, which is exactly what I wanted for feeding at 3am.

Heavier than it looks, in a good way

It is smaller than I pictured but the base has real weight to it, so tapping the top does not push it around the table. Brushed finish picks up fingerprints if you grab the disc rather than the stem, but a dry cloth sorts it in a second.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a charge really last?
Up to 48 hours from the 1800 mAh cell if you keep it low and warm, which is how most people use a bedside lamp. At full brightness on the cool setting it runs for a good deal less. A full charge takes about three hours with the USB cable supplied.
How do the three tones of light work?
A short press on the raised button steps through warm white, neutral white and cool white. Hold the same button and the brightness slides up or down with no steps. There is also a physical on/off switch under the base for when you want it fully off.
Does it provide enough light for reading?
It is a light for atmosphere and close work, not for a room. On the cool setting at full brightness it is comfortable for reading a book in your lap or a bedtime story. It will not light a whole bedroom and is not meant to.
What are its dimensions?
Small: a lamp for a nightstand or side table, not a floor lamp. It arrives in a box of 22 × 16 × 14 cm and weighs 407 g packed, and the base is solid metal, so it feels heavier in the hand than it looks in a photograph.
Can it go outdoors?
On a dry evening, yes: a balcony or a covered table is exactly where a cordless lamp is useful. It is not weatherproof, though, so bring it in before rain or dew and never leave it out overnight.
Does the finish show marks?
Brushed nickel shows fingerprints where you touch it, mostly on the top disc. A dry cloth wiped along the grain removes them in a second. Do not use cream cleaners or solvents, which dull the brushed grain permanently.
