A bell earns its place by the sound it makes, and this brass bell was made to be heard properly. Made as one solid piece of unlacquered brass, it carries real weight, enough to give the tone depth and staying power, ringing out on its own without ever turning shrill.

  • Pure acoustic design, no electronics or batteries
  • Weighty solid-brass construction for a fuller note
  • One resonant ring that hangs in the air

Strike it to mark a moment; the note then carries through the room, soft at the edges yet impossible to miss, lingering well after you have stopped listening.

Overview

You know the sound already: one low note, and everyone in the room stops in mid-sentence and looks up. It is not an alarm, a notification or another chime from a phone speaker, but a real struck note that hangs in the air for a few seconds and then fades.

Haze™ makes that note because of what it is. It is turned from solid brass with a thick wall and a wide flared mouth, and the 15.5 cm weighs 900 g in the palm. Mass and wall thickness are what give a bell a long fundamental and not a thin, tinny clack. Nothing is plated. The brushed surface is brass all the way through, so a scratch shows brass and not the steel that plated bells conceal.

One flat tab with a single hole is cast into the crown, and that is all the mounting there is. Thread a jute cord through it and hang the bell from a beam by the door, from the eave over the deck, on the garden gate or above the studio bench. Or stand it on a shelf and lift it by the tab when you want it: for supper, for meditation or at the end of the working day.

There are three sizes, and they are different instruments: 10.5 cm for a bright, close note on a desk or a door, 13.5 cm for the middle of a room, and 15.5 cm for a note you feel in your chest.

Care

The brass has no lacquer, so it will darken. If you like the patina, do nothing beyond an occasional wipe with a dry cloth. To brighten it again, use a little brass polish on a soft cloth and buff along the brushing; wire wool and scouring pads cut through the satin grain. Outdoors it weathers faster and turns browner, which most people want; bring it in for a hard winter if you prefer to keep it pale. Do not put it in a dishwasher.

Materials

Solid brass throughout, brushed to a soft satin and left without lacquer, with a flat pierced tab cast into the crown for hanging. With no plating and no coating, the finish slowly warms and deepens with handling, as brass door furniture does. Verified sizes: 10.5 cm across the mouth × 10.5 cm tall, 256 g · 13.5 × 15.5 cm, 740 g · 15.5 × 16.6 cm, 900 g. Cord and hook are not included; any jute or leather cord of 4–6 mm threads straight through the tab.

The note comes from the mass

Hang it and do without a doorbell

Pass a cord through the tab on the crown and it hangs from a beam, an eave, a gate or a hook by the door. Outdoors it weathers to a deeper brown and goes on ringing, with nothing to wire in, nothing to power and no battery to replace.

Heavier in the hand than it looks in the photo

The large one is 900 g of solid brass, with a mouth wider than an open hand. The weight is not for show: it is why the note is low and stays in the air, and does not stop the moment you let go.

One piece of brass with no plating

A brushed satin body, a wide flared mouth and one flat tab pierced for a cord. With no lacquer and no plating it ages naturally, and a scratch reveals only more brass.

Ordered two, both perfect

One for the back door and one for the studio. They arrived properly packed and neither had a mark on it. They are heavier than the photos let on — the 15.5 has real weight in the hand — and the brass is the same colour all the way through, not a coating over something else.

The sound is the whole point

Right size and the tone is lovely — low, and it carries much further than I expected. I was braced for something like a shop-counter bell and it is not that at all. Not cheap, but you can hear where the money went.

Give it a shake before you hang it

Mine turned up with the inner clapper loose in the box rather than fitted, so shake it once when it arrives and check. Five minutes to sort. Since then it has lived on the garden gate and I can hear it from the kitchen sink.

Frequently asked questions

Which size should I choose?
They are three different instruments and not only three prices. The 10.5 cm (256 g) gives a bright note for close range: a desk, a shop counter or a studio door. The 13.5 cm (740 g) is the all-rounder for a hallway or a dinner table. The 15.5 cm (900 g) is the one you feel as much as hear, and the one to choose for outdoors or for the far side of a garden.
Is a cord included?
No. The tab is pierced and left open on purpose, so you can hang it on whatever suits the place. Any jute, cotton or leather cord of 4–6 mm threads straight through. The clapper is inside the bell and is fitted before shipping; shake it once on arrival to check that it has not worked loose in transit.
Is the brass solid rather than plating?
Solid brass, brushed and left without lacquer. There is no plating and no clear coat, which explains its weight and why the tone is low and not tinny. A scratch reveals more brass, where a plated bell would show steel.
Can it hang outdoors?
Yes. Brass weathers well. It turns browner and less shiny in the first year, which is what most people want from a bell on a gate or under an eave. To keep it pale, bring it in for the winter or polish it now and then.
What volume is it?
In the two larger sizes it is loud enough to carry across a garden; buyers report hearing the 15.5 cm from inside the house when it hangs on the gate. It gives one struck note that dies away over a few seconds, not a continuous ring, so it announces something without sounding like an alarm.
Will it tarnish?
Yes, as intended. Brass without lacquer darkens with handling and air and warms to a deeper honey-brown, with brighter patches where fingers touch it. Left alone, it develops a patina like old door furniture. If you prefer it bright, a little brass polish on a soft cloth, worked along the brushing, restores it. Never use wire wool or a scouring pad, which cut through the satin grain for good.
