Overview

Open incense burners have one fault, and everyone finds it the same way: a fine grey ring of ash spreading over the shelf, and a draught that carries half of it to the sofa. The incense is not the problem. Burning it on an open plate in a room where doors open is.

Hearth is the enclosed alternative: a cast brass bowl with a domed, pierced lid. The coil or cone burns on the plate inside, the ash falls straight into the bowl, and only smoke comes out through the openwork. There is nothing to sweep up afterwards. You tip the ash into a bin when it builds up, and that is all.

The piercing has a second purpose. The openings are small and spread over the whole dome, so the smoke leaves as a dozen thin threads and not one hard column. It drifts and settles in the room and does not shoot to the ceiling and hang there. The lid also slows the burn a little, which is why a coil that lasts an hour on an open plate tends to last slightly longer in here.

It is cast brass and not pressed sheet, 100 g of it, with the relief and the two scroll handles formed in the mould and not stamped. Three short feet hold the base clear of the surface so that heat never reaches your shelf, and the lid simply lifts off, so it can be cleaned properly. Verified size: 10.3 cm across the handles, 8 cm across the bowl, 6.6 cm tall.

Care

Let it cool completely before you touch it; brass holds heat much longer than you would expect. Tip out the ash when it reaches the plate and wipe the inside with a dry cloth or a soft, dry brush. Do not wash it, because water left in the piercing of the lid turns green in time. Outside, dust only. Leave the antiqued finish alone: brass polish strips the darkening from the relief and the handles and leaves a flat, shiny gold that does not return.

Materials

Solid cast brass with an antiqued finish, in two parts: a shallow footed bowl with cast relief panels and two scroll handles, and a domed openwork lid with a turned knob. The lid lifts off and has no hinge or screw. Verified size: 10.3 cm across the handles, 8 cm across the bowl and 6.6 cm tall, approximately 100 g. Suitable for incense coils and cones. Incense is not included.

Why the ash stays inside

The coil burns on a plate inside a closed bowl, so ash falls straight down and only smoke leaves through the piercingSmall openings all over the dome break the smoke into thin threads that drift, not one hard column rising to the ceilingThree cast feet hold the base clear of the surface, so heat never reaches the shelf below

Waft™ Brass Censer burning on an oak shelf against a warm plaster wall

Small enough for the edge of a shelf

At 10.3 cm across it fits on a narrow shelf, a windowsill or the corner of a desk without taking over. Three feet keep the hot base off the wood, so it can stand where you would not risk an open plate.

Waft™ Brass Censer held in two hands, showing its 10.3 cm scale

It comes apart in two pieces

There is no hinge and no screw. The domed lid lifts straight off, you put the coil on the plate, and the lid goes back on. When ash builds up you tip out the bowl and wipe it dry, which is largely why people go on using one and do not leave it in a cupboard.

Cast, not pressed

The relief panels, the scroll handles and the openwork of the lid are all formed in the mould and not stamped into thin sheet. You can feel that in the weight, 100 g for something this size, and see it in the way the patina lies in the recesses.

No more grey ring on the sideboard

I had been using a little ceramic dish and was wiping ash off the sideboard every single time. This holds all of it. Burns coils fine and the smoke comes out in thin wisps rather than one straight line, which I actually prefer. Tip it out about once a fortnight.

Heavier than it looks in the photos

Expected thin pressed metal at this price and it is properly cast - you can see the detail is in the metal rather than stamped on. It is small though, about the width of my hand, so do not order it expecting a centrepiece. Gets hot, which the listing does say, so give it ten minutes before moving it.

Cones work better than sticks

Worth knowing it is made for coils and cones, not upright sticks - there is nowhere to hold one. I use cones and it is perfect, the whole thing contained with just smoke coming through the top. The dark patina in the pattern is nicer in person than the bright gold I was worried about.

Frequently asked questions

Which kinds of incense does it take?
Coils and cones, which sit on the plate inside the bowl. It is not made for upright sticks: there is no hole to hold one, and a stick would get in the way of the lid. If you burn sticks, this is not the right burner. Incense is not included, so you can go on using what you already have.
What is its actual size?
10.3 cm across the handles, 8 cm across the bowl and 6.6 cm tall, and about 100 g. That is roughly the width of an open hand. Brass objects photographed on a plain background look much larger than they are, so put a ruler on the shelf before you order.
Does the outside become hot?
Yes. It is solid brass with something burning inside, so the lid and the bowl both get hot and stay hot for a while after the coil has gone out. The three feet keep the surface underneath from heating, and they work: the shelf stays cool. Do not pick it up by the bowl while it is burning, and wait ten minutes before moving it.
How do I empty and clean it?
Wait until it is completely cold, lift off the lid, tip the ash into a bin and wipe the inside with a dry cloth or a soft, dry brush. Do not wash it. Water left in the openwork of the lid dries green and stains the brass, and it is very hard to remove from the piercing.
Is the brass solid rather than plating?
Solid cast brass with an antiqued finish, which is where the 100 g comes from. The relief, the scroll handles and the openwork are all formed in the mould and not pressed into thin sheet, so the detail is in the metal and will not wear away at the edges. Plated sheet of this size would weigh about a third as much and would blister where it gets hot.
Can I polish it when it darkens?
You can, but we advise against it. The darkening in the recesses is an intended antiqued finish and not tarnish, and brass polish removes it and leaves a flat, shiny gold that does not return. If the raised edges dull with time, a dry cloth brings back the shine on the high points and leaves the pattern alone, which is how it was finished to look.
