Most cheap brass animals are cast thin, hollow and flat at the back: fine from one angle and plainly a souvenir from every other.

This one is 35 g of solid metal in 54 mm, modelled in the round with the trunk curled up and the ears held out.

Care

A dry cloth is all it needs, with a soft brush for dust in the wrinkle lines. It has no lacquer, so it darkens where your fingers rest; a little brass polish on the raised surfaces restores the shine.

Is it solid brass, or hollow?

Solid cast brass all the way through: not hollow, not plated steel and not resin with a metallic coating. It weighs about 35 g, which gives a 54 mm object its density in the hand. It has no lacquer either, so the colour changes with handling.

Is a base needed?

No. All four feet are cast level and finished flat underneath, so it stands unaided and does not rock, even on glass or stone. Nothing is glued on that could come loose.

Does its surface gradually alter with use?

Yes, by design. The bright, rubbed-back areas, the crown, shoulders, spine and trunk, warm and slowly darken where fingers return to them, while the wrinkle lines stay dark. Brass polish on the high points restores the shine if you prefer it bright.
